Hunting bullet selection should be fundamentally based on impact velocity and that is determined by asking the following questions.
1. What distance do you anticipate hunting at.
2. What bullet weight would you like to hunt with.
3. What muzzle velocity do you anticipate getting from that bullet weight.
4. What BC has the bullet got and therefore what would the impact velocity be at your anticipated hunting distance.
In the end, your impact velocity should determine your selection of bullet construction.
Very high / High impact velocity will require a premium grade bullet. Standard / Target bullets will over expand and wound.
Very low impact velocity will require a softer / less strong bullet. Premium grade bullets will generally pencil through without expanding (and wound) at low impact velocity. They require high / medium-high impact velocity to do their best work. One premium bullet that will open reliably at low impact velocity is the Nosler Partition due to it's thin jacket / standard construction in the frontal section.
Medium impact velocity would be best suited by thin jacketed but bonded bullets. The Nosler Accubond / Partition would be good choices. Hornady's Accubond would also be good.
Bullet performance is something that can be anticipated and planned for. Selecting your hunting bullet correctly will result in cleaner kills and a more pleasant hunting experience.
