Thinking again.
Talking Rem 700 BDL here.
I'm thinking about getting a 308W barrel as a second barrel to screw onto an existing rifle.

I'm considering doing the switch barrel with two possible rifles:
1.) My 22-250, which is short action
2.) My 30-06 , which is long action

Either way I would get the headspace verified/corrected for that action.
Are the 22-250 feed lips too small to feed a 308W ?
Is the 30-06 feed too long to hold the 308 without slop ?

Of course, I could just buy another rifle in 308..........................

In my opinion, if you have a .30-06 Springfield rifle, there is very little if any need for the .308 Winchester cartridge. Modern loads in modern rifles are very similar in performance. This was one of the reasons the military replaced the .30-06 with the .308 Win. (7.62x51)

Regarding the comparison between the .22-250 and the .308 Win., the standard feed lips have a greater taper to them in the .22-250. See the dimensions in the drawings below.

You could make this work by using DBM and separate magazines with the rails opened.

However, you can, as you suggested, buy a .308 Win. rifle...

Happy choices!

Either will work, however, you are going to prefer the short action simply for the reason the long action is gonna give you headaches with feeding from the mag…
I built mine on a SA SPS Stainless action, running barrels in 7-08 and 260AI, both being 26" long with 1:8" twists.
I do not find the SA to be restrictive with a Wyatt's extended mag box, I forget what length it is, maybe 3.00"?
Before putting the Wyatt's in, the only bullet that was restricted was the 156g Berger in the 260AI, but after using it for a while, I preferred a lighter bullet in the 140g class and kept the 156's for my custom 264WM.

Cheers.

A great switch barrel setup is 22-250, 243 and 308. That would cover most bases. You can just get the correct mag for 22-250 vs others but may work already. Other good suggestions here.

Switch barrels are an addictive thing to get into. I now have a Ruger Pedator running 2 barrels, a Rem 722 running 2 barrels and 3 Sav with around 8 barrels. Still have plenty of caliber specific guns, mainly old rifle.
