308 win and the berger 215

Its been a few months and many of dollars but my rig is finally together.

29.5" lilja #7 3 grv 1:10 ( 1-10.75)
Stiller tac 300
Manners t4a w/ adj butt plate
Jewel trigger

I havent settled on a load yet but after breaking in the barrel i can push the 215 up to 2700 with mild pressure signs. Im gonna try to work with a node i found in the 2620 area and hopefully ill post back up with a final load and a ragged hole to go with it.

I reached 2693 with 48gns of re17 in a virgin lapua case.
The 3 shells i fired had an ES of 5 and slipped into a small figure 8.
If it werent for the mildly flattened primers and random ejector marks this would be my load.

Im gonna try it again with once fired brass and try to develop my 46.5 gn node that was wider as far as powder charge but had an es of about 25. This was producing velocity in the 2620 area.

Congrat's on your rifle, that thing looks SWEET!

I'll bet it's a pleasure to shoot. 215s at 2700 fps...wow! That's not grandpa's 308....grin

Thanks shane.
It weighed in at 15.8 lbs, with the warm loads it feels like a heavy '06. Its not bad, but when it goes off you know its not a typical 308.

Last night i reloaded the test shells i used to break in the barrel and the 48gn loads definitely had loose pockets.
I loaded up some more 46-47 gn sets in increments of .2 and tommorrow i will get out and look for a sweet spot. Hopefully i will find a good load without having to jack around with seating depth and primers too much. I dont wanna burn up too much of my hoard of 215's at short range. God willing, ill stretch her legs a bit and have some good photos of groups and dents in steel by next week.

I found a nice load using 46.4 gn of re 17 thats been pretty consistent. I did a seating test and found the 215's are much easier to shoot consistenly at different depths than other bergers ive played with in the past. Which was good because after the test i noticed my scope was moving.

Out of the 20 shots fired for seating depth at 5 different depths ES was 37 and SD was 9.

I chose to run the bullet on the lands until i can do another seating test because ive gotten good accuracy and velocity spreads within the first .04 of jump. Then i went to go verify some drops because i just couldnt wait to see how the 215 flies, and i was sick of shooting groups through a chrono. Here are the results and some more gun porn.

Lapua case
Cci 200 primer
46.4 gn re 17
Berger hybrid 215. +.000 jump
Mv = 2660

The shots on steel were from 607 and 898 in 6-12 mph, 3/4-full value wind at sea level, its obvious which is which, and were the first shots taken over 100 yds with this rifle.

Bringing back an old thread but considering running some heavies in my 22" 1:10 308. Gonna single feed so that's not a problem.

Guess I'm curious as to how many guys have had their barrels throated for them and who is running the them in spec 308 chambers?

I haven't ran them in my PSS. I measured COAL with factory throat and I believe I could seat out to around 2.950" with 208 ELDM's. It might have been longer. I can try to confirm tomorrow night.

Thanks man. Yeah I measured mine with a 175 SMK lastnight and I'm sitting at 2.9" COAL to the lands

Curious to see how heavy I can go in this chamber. Thinkin about grabning some 208's just to play with and maybe having Shaun do a +P chamber on it.

Dang it this thread has me thinking of a 30" light palma barrel. Either remage or shouldered short chamber. rent a reamer and have at it lol.
