.308 at 1000 yards

I personally shoot a rem 700 with 26", 1:12 factory barrel. With a light load i shoot
the 185 gn berger hunting vld at just under 2600fps and it does 1260 fps with 650ft lb at 1k. Wind drift is .85moa per mph of full value wind.
This is at 60' above sea level.

Most of the guys i shoot ftr next to at the local range prefer the 175 smk, not exactly sure why, but ill bet its a great choice as well.

If that is the case, then why do they use a 1:7 twist for the .300 Blackout round shooting 210-220gr subsonics in 7" to 16" barrels?

Makes you think...And sometimes some of the "laws" of reasoning don't make any sense, and don't always follow like they're supposed to.
Well that actually makes sense. They're shooting heavy 210-220s which require a 1-10 twist in normal 22-24" barrels but in a super short 7"-16" barrel you really need a fast twist to stabilize that big heavy slug in such a short barrel. So a 1-7 twist makes sense In those little barrels. Also, when I said a 1-10 is pointless in a short barrel I was talking about 20" barrels shooting standard .308 loads. If your into shooting 220s in a 20" barrel than you need a 1-10 or an even faster one to if you're shooting a super short barrel like I said before.

Whether it's a 6" barrel or a 36" barrel, the stabilization factor won't change. It's the velocity here that matters. 300 blackout often gets used for subsonic applications. Hence the 7 twist.

That's what I meant, a shorter barrel obviously has lower velocity so thats what I meant when talking about stabilizing.

Speaking of .308s, my cousin just bought one today. He was looking for a gun he wasn't afraid to take in the rain and something that's cheaper to reload for than his .270 WSM. Well he went to the Dick's Sporting Goods closest to us and found a deal! They had a Remington 700 ADL in full stainless with a black synthetic stock chambered in .308 Winchester! He called me and before he could get the entire description out of his mouth I told him to buy it now, soon as I heard the price. They had it marked all the way down to $340 after $100 off and then 10% deducted from that price! The only negative thing is that it has a 1-10 twist, we were planning to shoot 165gr bullets or 168s which definitely work in a 1-12 but we are going to test it and see how it does once its bedded and scoped.

It will do just fine for 168's. I had a 1:10 twist 20" custom .308 built that shot 168's into the same hole. He won't be hindered at all.

I'm interested in the Idea of using the 185gr Berger VLD hunting bullet. I've been looking for load data to start a round of with. I can't find anything that keeps the .308 above transonic at 1K with a 185 gr bullet

With 0' elevation, 0 degrees F. and 2500'sec muzzle velocity they'll be supersonic beyond 1K so I'm not sure how you're getting the idea that they'll hit the transonic wall before 1K. That said, there's no reason to settle on 2500'sec either. 2650-2750 is easily attainable in 24-26" barrels. 10, 11, 11.25, or 12 twist work very well for the 185s.

Keeping the 308 supersonic is a breeze with 155s, 175 SMK, vld, any of the 185s the 190 SMK, vld and so on. 150s and some of the 168s not so much.

Take your pick with the 185. I'd start with 42.0 of VARGET, RL15 or 4064 and work up to 44.5 with each provided you don't run into pressure before 44.5 grains.

If you really want to melt a 185 out of a 308, try VV N-540, N-550 and RL17 or even H4350 if its a fast lot.

I run a lot of 190 SMKs and VLDs I'm all of my 308s with great results. I also shoot them at near sea-level and often in -5 to -20 degrees F. Accuracy and round holes at a grand are the norm.

Really? That seems a bit odd. I use imr 4064 and i even had a load with varget i was fond of.
My current load is 43.8gn of imr 4064 with a cci #200 primer and im about .02 off the lands. Velocity is 2565. With win and federal primers it hits an even 2600. This stays supersonic at 1k for me right above sea level.
If i did it all again i would def re visit varget and maybe even try the cfe223 hodgdon came out with last year.

Please remeber to reduce loads by 10% and work up.

Do you have the Berger manual? It's only like $25-30... Well worth it.

I don't have the manual yet. Everything I have is for reloading 22-250, .270, and 30-06. All I have Used to this day have been nosler bullet and Sierra Gamekings. I wanted to do my research before I got into a new round. I really like the Idea of the Berger 185gr VLD.

Like I said, I shoot the 210 VLD's out of a 24" 5R 11.25" twist barrel, and they're pretty nasty @ 2,400 fps MV.

I am shooting a 175 SMK @ 2730 fps out of a 22" Krieger elevation is 2250 and it will do anything I want out to 1100 after that a 210 VLD and I use Varget exclusively for my 308's
