300WSM VS 30-06 (26" barrel)

Suggestions are great but want to buddy up to my son's 06 for one very important reason. SHARED COMPONENTS!!😂 Thinking of consolidating my cartridges to take advantage of sharing same "inventory" of components.

Anybody else have these thoughts?
I think about it....and then go lie down till the evil thought goes away!

For me buying one when you have the other is kind of a hard sell. I've got a model 70 in 30-06 and a FN SPR 300 WSM in the safe that I keep threatening to have built up. In all my research the WSM will have ~200 ft/sec on the 06 when comparing apples to apples. I am curious as to why you think you can't load heavy in the WSM though. Factory hornady 200 gr loads are available and 200's are on the heavy side. In my 06 I get 2700 ft/sec in a handload with 200's and the WSM factory stuff is crushing at 2800.

In most cases a WSM is built around a short action and therefore limiting the overall length of a loaded round. So, heavy or long projectiles have to be stuffed into the case maybe limiting powder quanity…fps.

Hi Boots, I have a short barrel 22 inch Mannlicher Stock, Inter Arms Mark X , in 30 -06 , so I will follow this thread closely to see of I can improve on my old IMR 4350 , 165 Grn Load. Used this rifle just for deep woods , NY State , and Maine Deer Hunting.

Reloader 26 in the plain Jane 30-06 is awesome with the heavier bullets.I tried the Reloader26 @ 63.5grs with 180gr Nosler Ballistic Tips in two of 30-06's.Both rifles grouped this load about 3/4".My 23" barreled rifle ran it at 2890fps and my 24" barreled rifle was 2882fps.I'd expect it to run around 2950fps with a 26" barrel. My 28" barrel 30-06 got 2991fps.I could sqeeeze out a little more probably, just never when above that load.I loaded 61.0grs of Reloader 26 with a 200gr Accubond in the 28" barrel and it printed a nice clover group at 2815fps.My 28" barreled 30-06 runs darn close to my 26" barreled 300WSM and doesn't limit my mag box with the long action like the short action does.I've never shot any of the Hammers, but I'd expect the velocities to exceed mine.

Right but I'm saying you can buy factory ammo so it's not really an issue. I think SAAMI max is like 2.950, like the 6.5 PRC, so it fits. I would imagine you really wouldn't have an issue until you got up over the 215 berger or so. Then it wouldn't be worth the capacity loss

Muddyboots,

How about a 28 inch 10T KBI barrel 30-06? 3376 average launching the 137 HH through Serengeti chamber. Four firings still tight primer pockets.

2nd from L.

I'm currently assembling a tikka long action 300 wsm to shoot 180-220 grain bullets but really liked my 22" savage 30-06 with 165 SST and h414. Was 3/4 moa load with wlrmp and Remington brass. Best of luck with your decision
