.300 WSM Barrel Contour

Hello friends,
I am planning to build a medium weight .300 wsm on a skeletonized (Unknown Munitions) Tikka T3x action and would like your thoughts on the barrel contour you would use.
I plan for the barrel to be 22" long with 5/8x24 threads for a Silencer Central Backcountry Banish suppressor. The barrel will be reamed long for the Barnes 200 or Hammer 203HHT. See attached picture.

I'd like to be 8 lbs or less complete.
Projected weights:
Tikka T3x 24 oz.
Pure Precision stock 25-27 oz.
Pure Precision bottom metal 3 oz.
Talley Lightweight base/rings 2.2 oz
Leupold vx5hd 3-15x44 19.7 oz.
Total without barrel = 74.9 oz. Or 4 lbs 11 oz.

That leaves a max of 3 lbs 5 oz for the barrel.

I am fine with carbon fiber or a stainless steel barrel. And I am okay with deep fluting. But I want rigid enough for accurate/consistent shots out to 800 yards.

What would you do?

If you need 5/8" threads at the muzzle, carbon is the way to go.

That or a lighter barrel profile that increases in diameter at the muzzle (like a Barrett Field craft)

Or a lighter contour with a 5/8-24 adaptor as t the muzzle

There are a few ways to do it, but fluting a Rem Sendero contour (for example) is goona require a LOT of metal removal

Sounds like a cool build, hope you post some pics when it's done!

22" Proof Sendero should be 2 lb 13oz.

I had my 300 WSM model 70 redone last year with that barrel, McMillan Game Warden stock, Timney Triiger, same scope, rings and suppressor you have listed, as well as the Silencer Central muzzle brake. I don't remember the exact weight but it's right at 8 1/2 lbs.

I just had a 300 WSM barrel chambered, Brux #5 at 22".. Plenty of steel for 5/8" threads at 22"

Google vortex Super WSM. They're launching a heavy barnes mono without a longer throat. I guess it's just designed to fit a standard chamber but it's a long mono.

And a proof is the easy button, but I don't believe there's much difference between that and a heavy flute as far as rigidity. Even a pencil barrel is good for a shot or 2 at long range.

Why not go a little shorter? OAL with the banish would be more manageable at 20"

All of my builds these days for hunting suppressed are 16"-18"

I prefer the better handling over the little bit of missed velocity.

Have you consulted with the GS that will build your rig for a contour recommendation to meet your goal?

The .300 WSM thrives with >3" COAL. I have 2 .300 WSMs, which will be modified for >3" when they are due for a re-barrel. The barrel will be from our neck of the woods, Lilja. Stay your course at 22" barrel; it will give you the flexibility for suppressed, unsuppressed, or MB hunting. Good luck with your build.

Bugholes has a Bartlein 3B SS. 4.2# @26". Once you cut it down you'll be close to where you want to be in weight. 5/8 is doable or 9/16 with adapter.

I have a #3 chrome cut to 18" and 5/8 threads, 30 cal

A Bartlein 3B at 20-22", spiral fluted, will be good.

If you want to do a prefit, a Preferred Barrel .750" taperless, spiral fluted will also work.

I am not a fan of carbon wrapped barrels.

If you're going to shoot a lot, and get that barrel pretty warm, go with a standard barrel; non-carbon wrapped. The carbon wrapping is an insulator; cools a lot slower. Pretty though

Have you been behind a pure precision stock before? Grip csn be rather wide. A #4 at 22" will have plenty of meat for a 5/8x24
