300 WM seating depth/208 gr. A-Max

I am seating the 208gr AMAX .050 off the lands in my Savage model 111, 300 winmag, 24" barrel 1:10". I am using 69.8 grs. of IMR7828SSC, WLRM primers, Federal brass with an average velocity of 2780fps. I average 1" groups @ 200 yards

Thanks for the info jammer 300. I have a n 8 lb. container of H-1000 coming soon but will keep the 7828 in mind for future reference if needed. Hopeful that the 1000 will be the ticket. If not then the 7828 may play a role with mine.

WLRM is about all I have found so far. They must be OK for you though with that kind of group at 200. I have yet to fire mine. Waiting to get everything together before I get started. Looking into a brake also. A couple of weeks was what i was told for it to be ready.

I too have a Savage 111F in .300 WM (one of my go to rifles) with similar result except with H4831SC and CCI250.

As you can see COAL/CBTO is much shorter than my SAKOM995.

I would have thought the throat would be longer on the Savage than what you have. Bullet is very deep in the powder. I have a Rem. 700 Long Range and the throat is quite a bit longer. I'll start off at 3.601" with my first loads and see what they do.

What load did you settle with using the sc powder and the 208 A-Max?

I just did a fine measurement on the 208 A-Max and the 215 Berger and they both come out the same at 2.924" touching the lands.

Now my question is will a starting load of 72.0 gr of H-1000 be a little much for that seating depth for both bullets? I don't want to start too low with slow powder. Maybe some one will chime in with their opinion on a safe starting point.

Per Berger reloading manual using H1000 and 215 (26" and 3.34" COAL) ...

Start load: 70.5g, 2632 FPS
Max load: 74.0g, 2772 FPS (~fill ratio: 103%)

My Hornady 9th ed reloading manual has no recommendation using H1000 and 208 A-Max (in my limited test I started at 74g with .5g increments to 74g without any pressure signs), however, Hodgdon shows ...

Thanks FEENIX, I'm assuming a typo with the charge wt.

I'll start off with Berger's starting load and work from there. Guess this will be a good reason for a Berger Manual. Been wanting on for a while anyway. Next trip to the GS I'll pick one up.

How did you determine your max load? What charge increments were used and what seating depth did you use to find it? Reason I ask is the .300 WM is supposed to work best near max load if I read it right.

Do you find your sweet spot first and then find max load? Forgive all the questions, but understand, this is the first belted cartridge for me. Thanks for you patients.

Yep, should have been, 74 to 76 with .5g increments. Thanks!
