I have been trying to work up a long range hunting load for my 300 Win Mag and was told that a Berger Bullet in 168 VLD is a very popular and super accurate hunting load. Does anyone have experience with this combo? Are there any issues with the bullet fitting in the magazine? What powder is best? I have used RL-22 with this rifle in the past and it worked great for Barnes Triple X bullets.

Bergers are great hunting/target bullets. There accurate and have pretty high BC's. They are more of an expansion type bullet though and for hunting, I would recomend the 190g or better yet 210g. They will yield better numbers downrange, and since there still heavy bullets, penetration shouldn't be an issue. A 168g VLD at 300 WM velocities could get ugly real quick.

There are issues with fitting ANY VLD in the magazine.

VLD bullets like to seated to touch the rifling. In this arrangement, the loaded rounds won't fit in the magazine, unless it's modified (assuming that it can be lengthened).

meichele,

What is the difference between the 185 VLD and the 190 VLD? Besides 5 grains of mass. I bought the 185's. May try the 210's.

I have shot the Fereral Match Ammo in 190 grn and they group really well, but I shot a barbery sheep at 312 yards and did not like the penetration. They just seem to poke holes in the goat and exit, no expansion at all. My last round was a 180 ballistic tip which brought the animal down. All the prior shots were right behind the shoulder. Would RL-22 powder work well with the Berger 190's and 210's?

My Savage 112BVSS 300 WM likes 200 gr Accubonds and H-1000 powder, great to 1000 yds. Tried R-22 and this gun didn't like it.
Good luck on your testing.

If Rel 22 is so good, why isn't anyone trying Rel 25? For velocity, increasing the time under the pressure/time cure, will get you there and accuracy might be great.

With the heavier 180+ bullets it should be a crowd pleaser. I'm getting near 3000 fps with 180 grains @ upto (so far) 70 grains of Rel 25 in my 30-06 Ackley in a 26" SS Lilja barrel; Zero, zip, nada, pressure signs.

Both my buddy and I are shooting 168gr Triple shocks. We had awesome results this year. We shot Elk & Whitetail. We never found any of the bullets, because they all went right thru.
I have shot both ballistic tips & Accubonds, and I will never shoot either of these two again.
