30 Cal Mag for Hunting

I've been shooting a 300 Win Mag loaded with 180 gr Nosler Partitions over IMR 7828 or RL19 at around 3,000 fps for a long time and never saw any need to improve on that performance. Not that I don't like a new pretty face.... but need more? Not so much.

In today's world I think I would go with the 300 WSM. I have a friend that has taken most of his NA Slam with the 300 WSM.
But as Frank said above I think a bullet out of any of the 30 mags will do the job.

I like the 30-338 Lapua Improved. Shooting the berger 230 hybrids at 3,180 FPS. Brass lasts longer than the 300 ultra. And it is a tack driver.
You may be leaving some velocity in the table.
Cant say for sure, 210s were the heaviest I shot in mine.

WSM fan here, perfect blend of efficiency and power for my uses. since my wife killed a Buffalo with it I'm a firm believer that a well placed 200 grain ELD-X will do anything you need it to.

My choice is the 300 win mag. It's my only experience as well however. Someday a ways down the road a .30-338 lapua improved is pretty much at the top of the list of wildcats I'd like to play with. The factory offerings for larger than win mag 30 cal don't seem to give a gain in proportion to their greater cost and shorter life.

In short action 24" barrel: 300 WSM
Mountain gun light and fun to carry. Multi day backpack hunts.
In long action 26" barrel: 300 RUM
Truck/moto/Atv gun used more for day use/overnighters. Right tool for the right job.

So I shoot the 300 RUM because I like the ability to launch heavy for caliber bullets at 3000fps plus. The down side is finding brass and powder that will push these to that velocity. Like RL26. Some day I go to a 338 Lapua for my LR hunting/shooting. That said, and if I only had one gun to do it all I would probably pick the 300PRC or the 300 Win leaning more to the 300 win. I always found brass for this round and some of the powders that are on the shelf all the time work well.

I am pretty close to max at 3180 with the 230 bergers. I wanted to try something different so I necked down the 33XC to a 30 cal shooting the 245 bergers around 3300 fps with great accuracy.

My 300RUM was shooting the 220ELDX at 3123 with RL26. I still have about 20 rounds of the RL26 220 combo I saved for another hunting season but as for getting any RL26 now I may be SOL for while.

Had a300 h and h for 50 years till shot out did it all, smallest of the 30 mags. But the win mag does it all to little faster. For hunting plenty of gun, and generally ammo is available most places. Only thing have against the win is short magazine, so hard to play with load tuning. With that said I tried a lot of things for my son whinny, and the only thing it shoots well is factory ammo
