30 378 weatherby

Been shooting the 180 gr ballistic tips for about 10 years from mine. Can't remember exactly what charge but it's a decent dose of 8700. Absolutely devastating on whitetail near and far

H1000 and 230gr Berger OTM's around 3025fps accurate and taken game up to elk out to 650yds

I took the elk in my avatar with a Berger Hunting VLD 210, CCI 250 primer, 113.5 grs. H50 BMG @ just a tad bit over 3200 fps with a 28.25" barrel with a 2" brake. My "liteweight" mountain rifle only weighs around 14 lbs. I started working on a load for the 230 gr. Berger with H870 but never finished working it up, partly because i was told it was somewhat of a temp. sensitive powder.

I forgot about another load i worked up with the Barnes 200 gr. LRX, CCI 250 primer, H50 BMG 118.5 @ 3310 fps.

any one using this case for long range hunting.what are your faverate loads.
Yes and load for several friends who have them as well and have for 20 years. Best load to date is 102.5 H1000, 181 Hammer Hunters, OAL 3.770 with Fed LMR match primers. FPS will vary per rifle with this load but you'll get in the range of 3400 and it's very mild on your brass. All necks are turned when new and anneal after every other firing with brass life exceeding five loads. Accuracy on all have been sub half MOA.
if you'd like further info, please PM me and I'll be happy to share.
Best of luck and happy shooting.. Stan

Berger 215's... 98gr of H1000... fed215 primer... Nice easy on barrel load that has shot well in 5 or 6 of the 30-378 accumarks I have done load work up on...

Loading 180gr accubonds on top of US869. 105grs if I remember right. Not near my notes at the moment.

:) You had better get the notes out! Just from Hodgdon reloading online 120 grains and a 180 is only 47,000 CUP. You would need about 20 more grains with a 180. It's not prime powder for sub 200 grain bullets

I just "crunched" some numbers. If I'm anywhere close on the weight ( scope+ rifle), recoil would be a little "sporty"....but, certainly not unbearable. About 6.5 ft/lbs. more than my wife's rifle, and about 4.0 ft/lbs less than mine. You certainly would not want to shoot bench-rest competition with it! memtb

My rifle weighs 12,4 pounds and recoil was 49.2 ft/lbs with this load and no brake.

After testing it with my brake, recoil dropped to 17.3 and after tuning the brake for that load it measured 12.8 ft/lbs of measured recoil. The recoil reduction was 74.1 % and near the highest reduction achieved to date. The powder to bullet weight ratio is very high with this cartridge (3 : 1
and this helps.

The biggest powder charge tested was 122 grains but as stated there was very little increase in velocity. (It looks like it can only burn so much powder inside the barrel and the rest is wasted)

So this is definitely a good place for a muzzle brake.

I shot a friends 460WBY offhand exactly ONCE. I handed it back to him and told him that I will never shoot that beast again.

I shot 375's, 458's and a 416 Rigby with no problem but that 460 was outragous
When I was around 19 years old there was this guy at the range with a bunch of Weatherby rifles. I didn't know much about them . He had a 300, 340, 378 and a 460. He asked if my friend and I wanted to shoot each . Oh heck yeah ! My friend started with 300 first and worked up. After 378 he didn't want to shoot the 460. I shot 460 first. I said holy s**t ! I thought it can only get better. 378 was just as bad. 340 not bad. 300 nothing. That was 43 yrs ago and I can still remember the kick. Pre muzzle brakes by the way. :)

I built improved versions of the 300, 340, and 378.....for my kids. 😀
My oldest son who is now 18, has shot a 378 Weatherby Improved since he was 15. My 15 year old daughter shoots a 340 Weatherby Improved. My 10 year old in a week will start shooting a 300 Weatherby Improved. Unbelievably accurate and an absolute dream to shoot.

Do you have brakes on them ? How much do rifles weigh ? I'm envious !
