30-06 question

Hmmmm.... If you take a look at the article I posted earlier.... and then read 436s reply.... you'll find that he basically copied and pasted his entire lengthy response from that article....

gun)------------------------------------------------------------------------------------:D

I honestly believe that the rifleman journal article is probable spot on... but he does say that this is for match shooting and 210 would be as heavy as he'd go for bullet weight with a 1-11 barrel. However.... 436, you might want to reference the article, as opposed to just pasting it in and having people consider it was coming from you as an original thought.

jboscobuys,

You are right sir, I should have ref the article, I thought the information would speak for itself, when I wrote back.."Here's a piece of information that might help you." I wasn't planning on post or referring to the whole article, hence my second remark'.., "Here's something on barrels that also might help"

I apologize if it confused anyone or the reply that I made with it.

Thank you for pointing that out.:)

Check out the hornady superformance 178 Amax load if you don't reload yet. It shoots very well when I reload this bullet. Not the best BC but its extremely accurate out of my factory rifle. But to get the best out of your gun I would consider reloading for it. Also don't get discouraged if it doesn't shoot well at first. There are a lot of things you can to yourself to a factory 700 to get it to shoot better. Free float the barrel, bedding, etc.

The shots circled in green is three shots at 250yrds. With a TC Venture . The other holes in the paper is AR spray from some young guys at the range LOL

Another bullet I would seriously consider for long distance hunting and range work is the Berger 215 hybrid. Even though it says target... Broz has done extensive field work on elk & other game with this bullet and the results are nothing short of stellar. It's gonna have a bit more kick than the lighter grain bullets as throwing heavies usually does as you work up the bullet grain weight, but I think it's gonna be hard to beat this bullet if you can find an accurate node. The hybrids are less seat sensitive than the normal VLDs, and the wind bucking BC for this puppy is a whooping .696.

Getting to 1k with these out of an 06 should be quite doable... And easier because of the high BC.

Good luck Cowboy... And no matter what else.. Have fun man. That's what it's all about.

I agree the 215 is probably the best long range bullet for the 06.
The 208 Amax is another good one. But if you don't reload yet I'm not sure if there is a available factory option. But I'm not sure I haven't bought factory ammo in years. You may find a factory option with the 185 berger from HSM and gunwerks but its not something to shoot alot they are costly..

Yeah... The 208s are nothing to sneeze at either. I am with you though man. Haven't bought a box of real ammo since I started reloading, except when I couldn't find any 300 wm brass and I picked up 2 boxes of federal fusions just so I could have 40 more pieces of brass to work with. Also... I do pick up some cheap American Eagle 223 varmint tipped rounds occasionally for 11 bucks as it shoots .40 out of my dpms sweet 16. I load for it too... but in a pinch, I'll grab some.

Cowboy... If you aren't reloading now... and you are considering long distance shooting, I would highly encourage you to start collecting/saving brass, and to start buying what you need to reload your own. It'll save you money long run and you can fine-tune your loads for "your" rifle. Also... You'll just spend a lot more time shooting which is hard to beat :D

Just my thoughts. Wish I would have started reloading earlier than I did. It's fun and I definitely enjoy the results.

I shoot so I can reload...or is it ?.. I reload so I can shoot.,..I don't know, This subject gets blurry as I look thru my well focused scope.. haha

gohring3006, that is some nice shooting.
jboscobuys, I'm sure I'll have fun, I love shooting

I will try both types of bullets from factory loads, I haven't gotten into reloading yet. I may someday though.

I do want to have some tune up work done on my rifle.

I really like my scope, I have a Leupold VX2 3-9x40 With the LR Duplex Recticle. It's very clear and bright.

That's a nice scope, But you might want to get one with a little more magnification and adjustable turrets to dial for long range. You will know what I'm talking about when you start shooting past 350-400 yards. I would save that scope for a nice .243 or something similar..
