30-06 Build Finally

So after some discussions with @bamban on Serengeti reamers, I finally got my 06 finished off. Edit: my gunsmith/friend knows Serengeti reamer designs quite well so the rifle has unique throat. Will bet it shoots lights out.

26" Mcgowen Sendero contour
1:9tw Serengeti bore rider 0.170 freebore added
Triggertech trigger
MDT Field stock
Black graphite cerakote
700LA trued

It's intended for 180HH and 168HHT's. Prob everything else I have on shelf.

So basically spin off of my 270TH to maximize efficiency and performance of standard cartridges instead of latest and greatest.

Okay....the black Cerakote does look great!

The old 06 , back to where it all started. Great post and great looking rifle. keep us posted on further load testing . I've been looking at building a 30-06 A.I. on the 280 case with a long throat and a 20-22"tube with a can. I want to be able to get it in and out of a pickup and a side x side without cussing. Just a good ranch gun.

I really like this. Everyone wants to run short barrels for long-distance hunting... why? A 26" barrel is going to give you more than 100 ft/sec over a 22" barrel, have less apparent muzzle blast, hold steadier, etc. You are right there with the performance of a .300 Win Mag out of a 20" barrel.

I'm building a similar rifle off of a Mausingfield M7 short action. I'm going to run a 26" barrel in 6.8 Western for deer and elk in the West and likely do the same for a 6 GT for coyotes, and use Sendero profile CF barrels to keep the weight down.

Suppressors mostly, this 30-06 is 20" and still gives me 2775 fps with the 178 ELD-X. That keeps me above 1800 fps out to 660 yards at 900 ft of elevation, plenty of distance for the deer I'm shooting here in PA. If I want to reach out farther I'll take the 20" 7 PRC or the 26" .300 Win Mag which gets me 850 yards or 1000 yards respectively.

Is it Phil?

BTW @skipglo put onto the new Field Stock from MDT and once I saw it and read features, decided to try it. Comes AICS ready (no magazine), adjustable cheekpiece, adjustable butt stock and standard aluminum bedding block. I bought MDT polymer mags

MDT has made this stock available for many different actions too. Price more than reasonable @ $299 IMO.

Once again, somebody spends my money off LRH! 😂

The MDT poly 5-round mags don't work with the MDT Field Stock... the mag release won't release because it can't clear the floorplate lip at the base of the magazine. I just ran into this, have pulled my mag release latch and am going to mill some clearance into it tomorrow to make it work.

@MDT, come on guys! You make the stocks, you make the mags. Is it too much to ask you to put a mag in the stock w/barreled action installed and see the clearance issue... and redesign (or at least bend) the mag release catch to eliminate this?

Iron sights!!! OMG! When was the last time anyone used iron sights!!!
I used them a lot as a kid, still do on my handguns. Even on my rifles, although they're getting blurrier! But, if you know what you're doing then you can hit with them. As a boy I shot many a squirrel in the head out to 50 yards with my Winchester 67A... that rifle was deadly... and any squirrel within 30 yards was dead. Of course, those of us who've shot high power matches over the years know what kind of shooting can be done with good aperture sights. If I mentioned some of the more memorable shots I've made with that 67A or my handguns some of you might think I was exaggerating.

I went to a father-son weekend for my son's frat (public university in Ohio) a couple of years ago. We went to the local indoor shooting range on Saturday morning... fathers and sons. The range had a rental Savage bolt action .22 boy's rifle (short stock and barrel) with iron sights... and a large target with playing cards on it. No one was hitting anything, so I stepped up to take a try. The lighting wasn't great and it was hard for my old eyes to see which card was what when looking through the sights, so I used an old trick... I figured out which card I wanted to hit at 25 yards, pointed the rifle off to the side to get good sight alignment, and then brought it back to the target to get a sight picture on the blurred card (e,g., 2nd from left, third row from top). I got 4 aces in 4 shots, and the boys (young men) were amazed. Then I shut them all up when we started shooting handguns. One of the fathers had a new (to him) Glock 42 and couldn't hit an 8" bullseye at 10', and started complaining about it. "Can I try it?" Sure, he said. I put 5 quick shots into a 1" group at that distance (it is a hard handgun to shoot/hit with because of the short sight radius, not a great trigger even for a Glock, and small grip... I'll stick with my Glock 23). I spent the rest of the time there teaching the sons (who all asked) and some of the fathers (who asked) how to shoot a handgun.

On the way out I heard one of his friends say, "Your dad is a really good shot... he must have been fantastic when he was younger!" My son mentioned all of the shooting trophies (high power rifle, silhouette, IPSC) I have at home. It was fun to put some humility into the college boy trash talkers who were giving us old men some grief when we first arrived.

Mines on a long action M7.
That's a nice buck... congrats!

I have an H-S Precision Varmint Takedown in .308 that I'm going to sell because it's muy expensivo to get an extra barrel/forend in a different caliber. The thing shoots, though. I'm hoping the M7 short action will be the basis of a multi-caliber setup as the foundation for playing around with all sorts of calibers. I bought the barreled action (had a 20" 1:9.5" twist CF .308 pre-fit barrel) off of this site, but want to get barrels with Savage barrel nuts so I can swap them without the need for an action wrench or barrel vice. The action came with the .470" bolt face and I've picked up a .535" bolt face for magnum/WSM/PRC cartridges... now just need a .378" bolt face and extractor and I'm done.

What stock are you running? I went the inexpensive route because I don't know what I want and so picked up an MDT Field Stock.

I started with an AG composites stock however it was before they offered any stippling on the forend and grip and it is a bit slippery when wet so now it is in a Manners Pro Hunter.

That particular rifle at one point in time has had the following barrels - 24" 6.5 PRC, 26" .300 Win Mag, 20" Smokeless Muzzleloader, 22" 6.5 Creedmoor, 20" 30-06. It is also wearing its third stock, 5th scope and third bottom metal. It was my third custom action and now I'm up to 6 so I've been swapping stocks, barrels and scopes around to build my best options.
