3 or 4 rings?

I don't consider myself a true long range hunter anymore but decided to join the forum to see what the young guys are up to. I'll share a story about a 3 ring scope set-up.

My old Japanese .378 Weatherby Mag Mark V using 270gr factory ammo gave me a problem when I first got it in 1990.
It wasn't very scope and ring friendly. One of the first inexpensive scopes I mounted blew up the internals into a "fuzzy" view. Then I mounted a Burris Signature 2-½x10x50 on it because it had the old Posi-lock feature where you could "lock" your reticle in place and it would stand up to the recoil without drifting. I used Burris bases and rings with the front one being an "extended" ring to enable mounting the scope forward enough for me. Well, after firing 3 rounds, the front ring broke off and my scope was pointing into the air on a 25° angle!

So, back then I was a top mold-maker and design engineer for plastic injection and die cast mold making and decided to make my own 420SS scope base using 3 Tasco World Class Rings. I picked them because they mounted to the base using a tapered stem system that was rock solid when tightened down. Anyway, I machined, heat-treated, surface ground and hand fit the custom-fit base to the rifle. I sent it out to have the 3 rings jig ground to within .0001" concentricity (one ten-thousands) and then lapped. I used lock-tite both on the base to the rifle and a dab inside the rings.

The mount was excellent and worked great. I was able to use that Burris for about 20+ years on that scope base and ring set-up and still have it. This set up allowed me to retain zero, and I hunted with that set up for many years. I don't shoot nearly as long range as many of you do, with the longest shot was a Mule Deer at 660 yards and later an elk at 420 yards during a combination elk/mule deer hunt in Colorado. I also made the same mounting system for another Mark V chambered in 30-'06, also with a Burris Signature 3x9x44, which was my favorite rifle of all.

Since about 10 years or more ago, I wanted to use a 30mm tube Trijicon scope, so the 1" rings and base set-up was removed. I now use Leupold bases and their 30mm PRW and QRW rings with no problems, and have since topped them with Leopold VX-5 and VX-6 HD scopes.
Here is a picture from many years ago showing the 2 rifles with the old home-made 3 ring set-up.

I have a 338 Lapua Imp. Do you guys with the bigger rifles ever see the need for more than the standard two rings. I was talking to a bullet manufacturer the other day and he was telling me that he runs two sets of rings on his. Scope is a ATACR 7-35F1. I have the 6 screw Nightforce rings now
Buy a Near Manufacturing Alpha Mount. It's a single mount system with 3 rings. It's bullet proof and it will allow you to remove the mounted scope and put it on other rifles if you wish. I have 2 of them. One on a 300 WSM and the other on a 338 LM.
Call and talk to Richard Near. He'll make sure you get what you need. Great guy and very knowledgeable. He's in Canada.

Guess I'll be ordering one of those. Wish I had seen this before I bought the 6 screw Nightforce rings. Thanks

You won't be disappointed. Richard Near is a big Weatherby fan and designed these to Handel the bigger Weatherby cartridges. I had a long talk with him the first time I ordered a set of his mounts/rings. He explained the "snappping" forces created by a muzzle break on recoil and how destructive they can be to rings and scopes. I've been very happy with my Alpha Mounts. I also purchased a picatinny rail for 2 of my rifles. They are precision pieces of art.

My 378 Weatherby came with a factory muzzle brake. I can attest it is extremely hard on scopes and mounts, presumably due to those forces he mentions.

That's why my Alphamount holds a NF ATACR. I wanted the most bomb proof setup on my 338 Lapua. Truly a case of buy once, cry once. I've had zero issues with the mount and scope.
