277 170 berger elites

I built a 8 twist 270wby because of this.
Crazy.

My weakness besides this cartridge...is the barrel nut...I have a 28", 1-8, CarbonSix barrel on order...

Off topic...

I have over 1000 rounds through my, 28", 1-9 Benchmark barrel. 130s @ 3700fps, 140s @ 3625fps, 150s @ 3550 fps and the 170s @ 3225fps...Using H1000 and RL-26. Russian Mag primers. Still shooting well...Killed my Bull Elk last October...using the 170 Berger...

Benchmark took 10 months to get me a spare pre-fit...difficult to deal with them...I am 6 weeks into an estimated 16 week wait for a CarbonSix barrel...

May have to shoot out my existing barrel with the 170s....

That is cheap @ $30 a box...Crazy...:)

Got my barrel from Pac Nor yesterday. Quoted 8 to 10 weeks, delivered in 6 weeks.
Borescoped bore is immaculate!
I'm making a OAL guage for the freebore when I get a case fireformed. I have a suspicion it doesnt have .375" freebore.
We'll see .

Soo...what will be the first cartridge/bullet that you will shoot out of your 270 Wby?

Believe it or not. 150gr SST with Sierra's accuracy load of 68.6gr H4831sc. Barrel break-in only.
I have a metric **** ton of unused/unwanted .277 cal bullets laying around for fireforming all this new Norma brass.

That is funny...150 SST is my fireform load...H1000 @3550 fps...

Pic is of 150 SST vs 170 Berger cartridge...

Have fun...:)

I am starting 3.633" which is 0.020 off and that used up all the space in my mag. 3.653" is to the lands in this rifle.

Is that a stable COAL?

I just went out and measured what 3.633" COAL with a 170 Berger looked like.

It looks like the bottom of the boat-tail is even with the shoulder-neck junction and only half of the bearing surface of the bullet is contained by the case neck...

Is that enough to "hold" the bullet?

I usually shoot mine at 3.54" COAL...

TIA

I will try them there and see what happens, this is probably a waste of time anyways being a 10 twist but i had to try them

I tried the 170s today with RL 26.
They shot just over moa at 200 yards and 66 gr of RL 26 gave me 3000 fps with no pressure. Not sure if rl26 is the right powder . From 62 gr to 66gr
I only gained 40 fps.
I shot a 66 gr load at the 500 yard steel and it was 3.25" group which supprised me. I thought they would be horrible in this 10 twist.
Not sure what powder to use to get more velocity , any suggestions ?
Retumbo maybe ?
