Like the title says what would you say the max effective range would be for 270wsm, particularly on elk? Reason i ask is im thinking of re-barreling my 270wsm to 300wsm when the time comes. Any thoughts?
Probably in the neighborhood of 700-800 yards for elk if you push it to max loads.
I'd consider those yardages max for deer and reduce it to 500-600 for a big bull elk, and a bit more for a cow. This is with the current bullet offerings readily available in .277" diameter.
I agree with factory ammo, but this cartridge has a lot to offer if hand loaded.
And i will be shooting a handload. Im just wondering in a real world hunting situation if it would be worth it to me to move up from the 270wsm to the 300wsm?
Only after the 270 wsm barrel is warn out would it be worth it.
I agree if you know where your bullet is at all yardages the the 270 will do all you need.
You didn't say what rifle you have but if you join us Savage shooters all you would need to do is buy a 300 wsm barrel and switch to what caliber you want to shoot.

I shoot a tikka, and from the info ive gathered only a barrel swap would be needed for me as well.
yes you are right but I can change my barrel myself in less that 10 minutes.
and buy used barrels for $50.00
