270 WSM 145 ELD-X Loads

I have tried the Hornady 145 ELD-X in my Winchester Model 70 in 270WSM with IMR-7977 with ok results. MY velocity and ES was very good but I did not get the accuracy that I was looking for. I loaded the rounds in Norma brass and just a work of advise Norma brass has less volume than other makes so work up slowly. With 67.0 grains of IMR-7977 I got average velocity of 3106 with ES of 16 ft/sec. With 67.5 grains I got and average of 3146 ft/sec with an ES of 15 ft/sec. I probably could have worked with this load and gotten better accuracy but i quit working with the 145ELD-X and started working up loads with the 150 Berger VLD where I got much better accuracy with IMR-7977.

I used Retumbo in my wife Sako 270 WSM. Accuracy is great and very consitent. I found the ELDX liked to be seated fairly deep in the case. Velocity was 3145 from the 24 inch barrel. Until I tried this load I was not overly impressed with the round.I used the Federal 215 primers.

I'll add the 270 WSM is very versatile when it comes to powders it'll eat, I've got load data pm me if need more or other info, cheers 😉

Hey Kevin, I never could get the ELDX to shoot out of my 270 wsm. The best group I got was 1.250".

I swapped to 140 gr berger vld hunting and the 1st 3 shot group I shot was .750 and ended up getting it down to .2", 3 shot group. So I'm not much help if you plan on sticking with the ELDX.

I too am interested in what the forum members have to say.
I have a Winchester Model 70 Classic in 270 WSM I bought before Winchester became FN. My go to was 66.6gr of Win Supreme 780 under a 150gr ABLR shooting ragged hole at 100yrds. I still have 1.5lbs of 780 and a box of loaded ammo but will eventually need to change powders.
I love the 150 ABLR so plan on sticking with them.
Congrats on the purchase: love the 270 WSM!

Hey motorboat, it would probably be easier if you told me what powders you have , I'll use fed215s or cci 250's, mostly w-w brass, some norma, the triple shocks I'll typically jump .050 thousands,my 270 WSM is a Savage 14 ,24 in bbl. Sadly no data on 117HH bullets ,cheers

Thank you! Currently have RL 25, 22, 15 (** really could use some RL 26 hint hint anyone).. lol
Also have H4831sc, MagPro, H4350, H1000, Retumbo that's prob about all that might go with this caliber

Thank you, what powder and charge with the 140gr VLD? I'm working on those as well. Using RL19 atm

Prairie Sasquatch, mag pro is Formulated just for the WSM family of cartridges, did you use nosler brass? = less case volume compared to Winchester & Norma plus your factory Tikka bbl , I'm guessing gave you the lower speed , no offense about Tikka and I use no nosler brass . Reloaded for a friends 1885 falling block ,270 WSM 28 inch Octagon bbl 1/10 twist used MagPro it was Unreal the accuracy and speed averaged 3425 with close to max loads w-w-cases Speer 130 boatail forget primer ,🍀
Bought a 1885 in 270WSM Friday. Have RL 19, 22 (3lbs each) & 1 lb of RL26. 150 speer btsp & 145 ELD-X bullets. Rl22 & 26 Pulled ( for brass) 30 win copper impact , saved 10. Mag pro is probably un-obtainum. Do have a fresh lb of H1000. My 1st short mag. Think try RL26 first? Run any heavier bullets in that 1885?

Congrats on your 1885 in 270wsm ,if you need any data just pm me here ,you also did great on your powder's🥳, I'll check my notes,I've got a Savage model 14 in 270wsm 24 inch bbl ,but with your 28 bbl,you would gain 100 fps easy again I'll check my notes thks .

I ended up impulse buying a Christensen Arms 270 WSM. Have always wanted one and got a good price. I have done some searches but a lot of the posts are quite a few years old and not much was said about using H1000. I've herd now that the 270 WSM likes H1000 and was curious if anyone is running 145 gr ELD-X's with it. I say it really likes RL26 but I'm pretty sure I wont find that for another 3 years.... I do have a bunch of H1000 though so that's why I'm wanting to go that route. Thanks!
I use RL16 in my 270 wsm. 58.2 grs with Nosler 130 gr AB's and BT's, and Berger 130 gr vld-h and CH. And my current load is 58.7 grs RL16 with a Barnes 129 gr LRX @ 3164 fps at 46 thou jump. I've never used H1000 in my 270 wsm. RL 26 is too temp sensitive imo for hunting. Well it was in my 7mag. I don't use eldx but have found BT's and Bergers are too damaging at close range, why I switched to the LRX.
