270 Win For Long Range Shooting

Well a mile shot wouldn't be a chip shot regardless of the cartridge, but then killing a deer at that distance is a whole nuther thing. Which is why we haven't heard or read much about them. There are quite a few places in NC PA where you could shoot that far and even further. But most days during the season you could lay on the roads leading to them with little fear of being run over, and it has little to do with not having the right guns. As for the wind, it is whatever it is, which of coarse reflects on what i just said.
The shot the guy made with the 270, could well have been made with just a small holdover, but i wasent of a mindset at that time to ask questions like that.
The shot i made on the bear was a first round hit with a 7x300 Wby. Using a 162 gr Hornady match BTHP leaving the muzzle at about 3400 with no correction for wind, and i was shooting from a portable bench. No doubt luck played a roll, which in my opinion it often does, especially when hunting.

Agreed about a mile , but I was thinking 700 yds with that 338/378 Magnum . My back stop is 625 ,and I've shot that plenty for fun & practice , also have shot out to 1,000 yds with my 308 & my 7STW ,168's 2850 ish & 160 N partitions 3225 fps , that 162 load out of your 7/300 is smokeing at 3400 , you running hot or a longer bbl. Yeah is sure sounds like a great way to take deer long range in PA especially with those out cropping that I guy could set up on!!! Seen some pics from other posts Very interesting , & yes wish it was talked about more ,probably a dieing art like some many others , nice reading thks congrats on your bear !!!

As for the velocity, first realize that the 7x300 Wby and the 7 STW are very similar cartridges balisticly.
Years back we really didn't have the best powder to give max performance from them and others as well.
For many years many of us used H870, which gave me about 3250 FPS using 89/90 gr with the 162 gr bullet with a 30" barrel. When 7828 became available i was advised to try it.
And that made an entirely different gun out of my 7x300 Wby.
Mind you now I don't shoot those guns year round. Only in the fall in cooler weather.
Also realize that when the door slams with that powder, it slams fast. There will be no slow to show pressure signs with a slightly sticky bolt at least in my experience.
78/79 gr max (in my gun) is good with the 162, 80 gr especially on a warmer day or a warmer barrel wont be.
I'd be trying the powder in your gun by loading just one round in half grain increases, and shooting them over a chronograph.
No need even for a target, or any specific distance, even a dirt pile for a backstop will suffice. At the slightest sign of a sticky bolt, stop and back up to the last one for the max load.
You are only looking for velocity, not a load at this point.
But i always start with finding the max velocity first, and so do many others. Then try to make that work well with various seating depth changes before reducing the powder charge.
Again, these are cool weather hunting loads for hunting guns.
