.270 Win ?? well... the way I see it, it's not the best Deer and Elk popper out there for sure, but'..., it'll do the job until the best one comes along. Whether you're shooting a 100gr or 150gr it's a sold Deer rifle, on Elk the 150gr. is proven it's worth over and over again and it's been doing a pretty good job since 1925 I think the caliber was good enough that Roy Weatherby brought out his .270 Wby Mag 1943 and from what can be found it's one of Roy's all-time favorite cartridge calibers. Is it the best? who knows, but... it sure has some staying power as older cartridges go. Cheers!

My really love is my 721 Rem in a 22" barrel. under 3" groups at 500yds. I made a few kills at that range, and Antelope too. Most of the time under 200yds. My cousins using 270, and I took a lot of deer during our time. I am the last of the that group.
I think Roy Weatherby would have liked me. I like his theory on fast bullets. I have one of his 378 Rino Rifles. Don't get crazy looking all over the internet for a Rino Rifle. That's just what I call mine. Bullet coefficients are the best for that particular caliber, but energy is good. A 300-grain bullet at 2,900 FPS, give or take, will use up a few foot-pounds of that energy on the deer, and then use the remaining 5,000 or so pounds up on the pine tree behind the deer. If the Pinetree is big enough, it will survive, but the deer will come home with me.

I have a small place in the Texas Piney Woods where a 100-yard shot is about as far as I can shoot. But, my brother-in-law has a much larger place in central Texas and he lets me build roads and ponds and knock over his mesquite trees and clear his land with his bulldozer, and I return the favor by hunting deer and hogs on his property. Seems like a fair enough trade--for him especially. Having cleared out so much land has given me the opportunity to shoot at some extreme ranges. From one hilltop I could hunt the edges of his hay fields and a 2000-yard shot would be possible, though I will not be attempting that shot. I am, however, considering building a 1,000 yard rifle for the first time in my long life. Y'all deserve a great big ol' thanks for prodding me on.

You are very fortunate for access to your brother in laws place. Here in Utah we have farmland, desert (aka BLM "managed" land) or the United States Forest Service land. The government agencies are attempting to limit vehicle traffic on the mountain "roads" close them or simply do not maintain them at all. Several roads were we hunt in the Unitas used to be good enough for a trailer to be pulled on them..... No longer, and be ready to slowly drive on them..... I will stop my rant

I know how lucky I am to have my brother-in-law's place to hunt on. That is why I work so hard there. I never liked hunting gov'ment land. Back when there were no ATVs and UTVs and fewer people tearing up everything and leaving their trash where it does not belong, the Gov'ment didn't feel the need to block out hunters. I truly feel sorry for you and all the hunters that don't ruin everything they touch. There oughta be a bounty.

There are a lot of cartridges out there that get it done every year, and some are a lot older than the 270 Win. So I think I'd use "Awesome" as the word to describe the 270 and not best. That is why I own three 270 Win rifles, and would have four except I gave one to my brother. My favorite weight bullet is now the 140, but I load and shoot everything from 110 - 160 grains. This cartridge is why I don't own anything from 25 through 28 caliber (except a single shot pistol in 7-08).

I think your on to something , I don't dabble in the 7's much either. I don't have any bad feelings towards them but the 270 kind of covers the 25 and 284 arena . 26 and 30's I do play with but yes I love the 270 win! Really good thoughts here !

Arguing over deer calibers... is like arguing over which tires are better on the "grocery getter" for hitting opossums on the highway.

I'm a 270 Fan for Deer! All My life !! 130 Grn ballistic Tips Work Well For me ! I own Several Rifles , but my Go to Whitetail Deer Rifle is my Weatherby Ultra light , 24, inch Krieger SS Barrel! I've used the same load for 12 Years , not going to change it!! Nothing against 30 06 Or 308, Which I also own ! Just Completely happy With that 270 Win ! If I have to shoot really Far , I'll shoot my 270 Weatherby Mag !
