.270 the best?

Obviously a guy (JOC) who killed about everything with a steel and wood gun topped by a 7/8" tube 2.5X scope with a 5" dot, didn't know anything. Right ?

Lousy writer as well !

Nothing wrong with the 270, but I prefer a 7mm-08 in a short action/fast handling rifle as my very best all around deer rifle/cartridge. Different strokes I suppose. No recoil to speak of and more bullet weights to choose from. I'm sure it don't kill em' any deader but its my favorite.....I did start my deer hunting career with a 270 pre 64 Win., but its a long way down the road now.

The 270 and 257 has been so much neglected by the bullet companies that they lag far behind for long range hunting. Everyone is different but I don't really call 500 yards long range hunting. Intermediate at best. But the bullets in 6mm, 6.5, 7mm, 30 and 338 all have heavy for caliber high bc bullets. Back when the 2 famous guys were duking it out with the 270 and 06 500 yards was long range. But with the advent of really good range finders and great bullets in awesome cartridges long range is much farther now. The 270 and 257 each have about 1 bullet that is real high bc and neither can be used in any factory 270 or 257 made. The 257bee is my all time favorite for deer but in reality the 280rem or better yet the 280ai is probably the better of them bulit on the 06 case. Everyone has the idea of what's perfect. But everyone has different parameters in which they hunt. I could kill deer every yr for as long as I live with a 270 if I HAD too. I'm glad I don't have too. And really once you kill a few deer with a 257 bee you will have a hard time picking up anything else.

I like the .270 win a lot, but I like the .280 rem a little more.
I e killed more with a 270 Win than with my 7mm Rem
I like the .270 win a lot, but I like the .280 rem a little more.
I've killed more big game with my 270 Win than I have with my 7mmRem Mag actually.Just because I've taken it more.
I like the 260 Rem alot.
I did switch over to 6.5 PRC this year and looking at buying or building a 300 PRC.
I've not killed a thing but paper and steel with my 6.5 Creedmoor though..lol

308 is the best caliber in the north country for whitetail, much better options for bullets and reloading. Cases, bullets and powder easy to find, I can't remember the last time I even saw 270 bullets in the store! Distant cousins had some 270s and had a hard time getting the rifles dialed in. Prefer the short action 308, hunt a lot with the 7mm 08 too for deer. The 7mm 08 seems to have a cult following in some areas and I have noticed it here.

270 Win is a great cartridge. When I lived in Idaho I was a custom hand loader and the three cartridges that I loaded for people the most was the 270 win, the 7mm rem mag pretty much a tie and then the 243 win. Granted I did load a fair number of other cartridges as well, but overall volume was in those three cartridges.

I've never owned a 270 and I never will. It just doesn't do it for me. As someone else stated, I'd take a 7mm-08 over a 270 any day. I'm not saying the 270 isn't a good cartridge but it's not a good one for me.

Who thinks the .270 Winchester is the best deer round ever created? I think it just might be the absolute best. And which load is better for deer, the 130 grain or the 150 grain? I prefer the 150. You get great penetration from the 150.

The .270 Win is a formidable chambering. However, regardless of chambering, if you put "best" in the mix, it will complicate things unnecessarily. The chambering alone does not do justice, it boils down to the overall rifle set-up. JOC's .270 Win is no longer hampered by barrel twist rate, powders, and availability of high BC bullets. My .270 AI propels the 175 Matrix VLDs at 2993 FPS (my current accuracy load) out of 30" Lilja SS 1:8" 3G with H4831SC. Others are claiming an additional 75-100 FPS in velocity.
