270-300 Win Mag now feasible

If you talk to Marshall at Matrix he can do a special run of the 175 grainers if you order enough of them.

Would definitely be a strong candidate for this. I have an older 300 WM that you have given me an idea for. lightbulb

That is where i got my idea from. I shoot the Matrix 165s what is the bc on a 175?

Here is the 270-300 (R)

Ok range report. I initially tried rl25,imr7828,h4831 and h1000 with the nosler 150gr lrab.

The best consistency was with the h1000. The other had higher pressure earlier. The h1000 put three shots within a half inch at 100yRxs, and the loads were 1 grain apart. 70-72 grs. Velocity was 3300 almost exactly.

The Matrix 165s i loaded with h1000 and i achieved 3200fps with a 3/8"group.

I am thinking of trying slower powders like retumbo or h869,870.

The velocity is there, i may yet get 3250-3300 on the 165s which is what i am hoping for.

Nice job and it seems like you have a great cartridge there…

I am having similar results with my 270 Weatherby, 28" Benchmark, 1-9 twist .

3300 fps with the Matrix 165s with 77 grs of H1000 is too hot for my gun. 74 grs of H1000 gets me about 3160 fps. 75.5 gr H1000 gets me about 3270 fps but is about the hottest that I would like to go.

The 175 Martix, pushing 71gr of H1000 was doing 3054fps with out any load development. That load did have an ES of 28fps.

Hornady 150 SSTs, Nosler 150 (non Long range), Sierra 150s, Matrix 150s and Berger 150s did ave about 3384fps pushed by 78 grs of H1000. I did not do any max load development on these loads. Most ESs on this load were around 25fps…77 grs ran about 3340 fps. All these loads were accurate as heck...

Hope this will help you with a ballpark comparing point with your new cartridge (and it looks like your case has slightly more volume than mine).

Have you shot any 130s though your 1:9 ? Curious on speed and performance as I've been looking at going with that twist upon rebarrel, but will still use 130s as well as heavier stuff .

A faster twist barrel wont impede you from shooting lighter weight bullets. Brian Litz's experiments showed that you can even increase effective bc from "overstabilization" , and it qould not make the bullet plane out into space.

If you are rebarreling, consider the 1-8 since they are available and tearing it up in the 6.5 world.

So at the range last Sunday 108 degree heat,( me-not the bullets!) here is what i found:

Retumbo was a good candidate and it ran the Matrix 165s to 3250.

The surprise was h869. It is a spherical and dense powder, and very slow.

With great consistency i achieved 3200fps, but I am not near a maximum pressure yet. H1000,retumbo, rl25 have all hit pressures i didnt want, but this ultra slow powder I feel has more promise. I would be very happy with an accurate load at 3300fps that wasnt to the firewalls on pressure. I think this may deliver that!

Once im in the neighborhood, then I will fine tune for accuracy.

Interesting...

I also hit higher pressures with the H1000. I was going to get some Retumbo to try, now with your experience, I will try some other powders...I have some WC867 to try...I also have some IMR 7977 that should be here in the next few days...

Interesting times for the 270...
