25-284 success

Recently completed a 25-284 build that has been hiding in the closet for way to many years. Built on a Mauser action with a 24" Douglas Barrel, not sure of twist. Have put 36 rounds down the tube so far, first 32 just shooting paper, then came fun in the field, with one hog, 2 white tail bucks and one Axis buck. Loading Lapua brass, 6.5-284, necked down to .257, with WLRP igniting 50.5 grs of H4831, pushing Hornady SST 117 gr pills.

Well done Duke!
I'm shooting 124g Hammer Hunters in my 6.5x284 behind 53g of RL 26 with 100 yd same hole results. It also consistently smacks the center of the 600 yd gong at my range. It's a favorite right now and I can't wait to try it on something besides paper and steel.
I wish I had hogs close by.
Only two places left in the world, those that have hogs and those that are fixing to. 🤣 So load up and be patient young grasshopper. Or come to Texas we have plenty. This one met his demise from a 6.5 Grendel and a 110 Controlled Chaos. He never took another step.

Probably a 10 twist if I had to guess. What velocity are you getting from the 4831? I have it to try if it is giving respectable velocities. Where were you hunting axis? Have been wanting to shoot an axis buck for a while. Heard it's very good table fare.

It was a JGS reamer speced for the 131BJ. This rifle has a 7.5 twist just for the heavies. Was told that the 115 Berger was a great choice as wellI, but if the 133 keeps on doing what it did to the swine I see no need to try anything else. Going to see what RL26 can offer over H1000. If like my 6.5PRC it will be another 150 fps, time will tell.
RL26 gave me another 100fps in my 25x284 with the 135s. But h1000 was more accurate and the node was much wider. Should be better on barrel life too. With the BC of the 135s I have plenty of velocity to 1000 yards for expansion, so the h1000 was my choice.

Thanks for the response, was hoping to get the chrono out this weekend but the weather is not looking to promising. The Axis are running free around the Texas Hill Country, escaped from the high fence game ranches. They are indeed excellent table fare.

You'll probably pick up 75-150FPS. RL26 is an amazing powder. I bit more temperamental than H1000 but once you have the load tweaked it gives amazing performance.

I built a 25 -284 last summer and worked up loads using H4350 with the 90 gr hammer absolute . I have a lot of other cal too shoot the heavies . I wanted as much vel as possible I pressured out at around 3800 fps , then changed powders too rl 19 and reached 3874 fps with a 3860 average. I am at the top end , but no dangerous pressure so backed down too a solid 3800 plus fps . The 25-284 has really impressed me . I use Lapua brass cci 200s rl19 and Redding 6.5.284 bushing dies with a comp 284 win seat die and a home made bushing too modify a lee crimp for the 25-284 . I had dies etc for other 284 parent case cartridges , it was a fun project . In my opinion the 25-284 should be a factory offering .I built mine with a 1-8 twist

Nice. Are ya'll necking down in one step and do you have to turn the necks?
Neck down one step no turn necks , That's 6.5-284 necked down too 25-284 Lapua is the only way too go. If you neck down from 284 win brass you will most likely have too turn ,you won't have enough neck clearance for proper bullet release ,causing unnecessary pressure. That is my experience. The necks will be too thick.

I just had a 25-284 built and was wondering you ever tested the RL26 with the 133grain bullets? would you mine sharing some of your data collected please.
