hey all, ive been thinking of trying the 220gr SMK in the 30-06 with H4831sc and a 9 1/2 magnum primer. GRT says should be possible to get a bit over 2600fps. Has anyone tried these in a 30-06, all discussions i have found were for 220gr round nose bullets and people pushing them slow. any experience would be appreciated. Goal is to switch from bergers to sierras due to availability and price, ive had good luck with them in the 22-250 and have been trying the 195gr tmk in my 30-06.

Update to this although I got no replies, 58.2gr of H4831sc with a cci200 primer yielded an average of 2599fps and **** roughly 1.25" with no testing on seating depth. Starline 2x fired brass was used. Cartridge overall length was 3.282"

I would expect that there aren't many people that would have experience with the 220. When I did reload for my 30-06 back I the 80s I used mid weight bullets of 150-165 anything heavier was considered bear/moose bullets and I would have been using imr powders and hunting deer. I think people today would be loading for the newer stuff, prc, creedmoor, etc. If I was reloading again for the 30-06 I'd probably start with the 178-190 stuff but with so many factory loadings with many different bullet brand/ construction options it's not really necessary but I know that's not exactly why we get into reloading in the first place.

So far my experiences have been that anything from 190 to 220 is ideal, the shorter the bearing surface the better. The 215gr Bergers did fantastic with IMR4831 at around 2675fps, the 195gr TMK also did great with 60.5gr of H4831SC, using a magnum primer in Winchester brass I was able to hit 2800fps. The 165gr load i had was with 62.7gr of RL22 and that hit 2999fps, my 150gr load with 57.5gr of Ramshot Big Game hit 3070fps roughly. Running the number the 30-06 seems to do better on the heavier side. My specific rifle actually preferred the heavy bullets.

I'm working on a 308 now and hopefully soon a 300wm.

Looks like you are have some good results. I've been thinking about getting another 30-06 to mess around with. I do have a 308 and 300 wm right now and I'm starting to mess with heavier bullets in it and will do testing after deer season. I would be interested to know what all you find out on the 308 and 300 wm as well. Thanks for sharing your info

30-06 is definitely worth the time if you want something to mess around with. I loaded up some 220s and 215s for my 308, I get the rifle this weekend. Not expecting great results and will probably switch to a 169smk for actual use but I will see what I can do with it. As for the 300 win mag, I don't think I'll be adventuring into any real unknowns

Those bullets, in every .30-06 I have loaded for, have shot these two very accurately and both are very easy to tune. And they work on deer and elk sized game extremely well.
