220 Swift build….

Ive had my share of Remmy 700's and win 70's ...after my hands touched a Tikka
I've retired to Tikka ....

LOL yeah I agree maybe Ill switch before my smith reams the chamber for my 22 250 blank for 22 250 AI ......Im going to seriously consider this as I can make all my brass from my 308 brass.....

Look into Bill and Pete Gostomski gunsmithing(301) 264-3773.

They have done a bunch of builds for my buddy and myself. All of them have been tac drivers.

I started with a swift and after the barrel was almost done I had it rechambered to the AI version. Best decision I've made. I'm getting 4600 with the 40 grain bullets, 4200 with the 53 vmax and 3600 with the berger 70 vld. I'm getting ready to mess with the 75 eld. Should be able to get close to 3500 or so.

Tell me about recoil in 40 and 50 grainers…how many rounds before your barrel was done? Will check out your builder…thanks for info!

Are you building a custom rifle from scratch , or re-barreling an existing rifle ?

I have a Ruger Model 77V 220 Swift that I had re-barreled by Douglas Premium Barrels , with a 1-8" twist , 26" varmint weight barrel , XX Stainless Steel , that I had them throat to accept the Hornady 80gr A-Max/ELDM bullets . I also had Douglas do an exact contour-match to original Ruger barrel taper .
It was very reasonably priced for new barrel , chambering , contouring , and fitting to action .

I load Winchester brass , Federal 210 Match primers , and H4350 powder , and velocity is 3305 FPS , with 1/4 MOA accuracy . It still holds that accuracy after approximately 1200 rounds .
It is very accurate at 1000 yards and out to 1200-1300 yards .

40-55's….1:12?
Get a fast twist - you won't regret it.

I rebarreled my Swift to shoot 75-80 gr bullets - the wind drift is half of the 55s. If you want a flat shooting varmint rifle out to 300 yards, get a .204 (flat yes, but drifts in the wind a lot).

I have a .204 and .220, but I do all of my PD shooting with .223 Remington. For all the talk about LR PDs, I find I shoot most of them between 100 and 250 yards.

Nothing against the Swift except for its age. The 22-250AI and 22 Creedmoor case designs put them ahead of it in my book. Back in its day, the Swift was king of the varmint rounds. Better bullets and case design have eliminated the trimming and case abuse that tapered cases like the standard 22-250 Remington and 220 Swift suffer from while increasing performance via higher twist rates and heavier, sleeker bullets. I don't own a 22-250 at this time, although I have had one in the stable for many years. I built a 1/7 twist 22 CM for my long range 22 cal and it has done amazingly well with the 95gr SMKs down through 60gr VMAXs. The superb performance of the 95gr SMKs make it a legitimate 1000 yard rifle. While I have enjoyed it, the 22 CM has run its course with me and will likely be refitted with a 6 Dasher barrel in the future. Good luck with whatever route you choose. The Swift and 22-250 have survived all these years for good reasons.

We'll be building from scratch…he's not interested in shooting the heavier bullets…night time hunting coyotes with a thermal…I'm looking for as little recoil as possible so he can see (and probably video) his hits or misses…hoping for point and shoot to 300 yards or so…. He's developed the interest in the 220 Swift- I was thinking 204…I'd really just like to check as many of our boxes as we can with any cartridge I can get components for…

Doesn't get much flatter than this. 53 vmax at 4200. This is the AI swift
