Savage barrel I had in a 6.5 creedmoor was rough, shot very well, but fouled after 30 rounds accuracy suffered. Took 3 times longer to clean than a browning Xbolt, CZ, and my other custom barrels. Not a fan.
I have 2 Savage Model 12 VLP's - one in 22-250 and the other in .204. I have not had any issues with fouling or losing accuracy even after shooting 200+ rounds in either of them between cleanings. I just came back from a S. Dakota prairie dog hunt where I shot over 200 rounds through both of them and they were just as accurate when I finished the hunt as they were when I started. I did clean them both when I got home and they cleaned up easily with no signs of any fouling.
I shot 100 rounds of factory Hornady 32 grain Vmax and a little over 100 hand loaded rounds in the .204. My Pet hand load is a 39 grain Sierra Blitzing over RL 10X powder.
I bought the .204 from a buddy who had only sent 21 rounds down the barrel. Still, I went through the Savage recommended barrel break-in and cleaning procedure (50 rounds and 20 bore cleanings) and have never noted any copper fouling in the barrel. I use Butches Bore Shine. Was the barrel break-in procedure a waste of time and ammo? You tell me - I can't argue with the results.
