.20 Tactical - thoughts?

Is your 20PPC a gas gun?

I have a 6mmAR.com built 20 Practical. Very very accurate for a gas gun. Just like the article on Accurate Shooter.

That said. I'm not fond of gas guns, I don't believe in "Black is cool". There has to be a reason beyond AR, I use them for PRS gas gun games.
Best reason for me is quick follow up shots for predator hunting.

Nope. Bat action, Hart barrel, box magazine (single shot reload).

I have "a saying". It goes like this - "I don't like AR's. I like to build AR's. That's why I have 10 starting at .22LR (dedicated upper on one of my lowers). The largest caliber is 8.6BLK."

Not to hijack a thread but there are a lot of 204cal "nerds" in this thread so....

I'm considering a 20x22arc, 20x22nosler or a 20x224 valkyrie. If I go gas gun the 20arc is out of the running. If I get a barrel spun up for my Howa mini then the 20x22arc is going to be my first choice. My smith is sending off dummy rounds for a straight neck down 20x22arc to get reamers "yes reamers" made. Will more than likely do a switch barrel set up on the mini.

I say all of that to ask this..... has anyone done anything like what I'm thinking about doing?

The .20 practical is easier. The neck angle is the same as .223
If your using a bushing .223 die just slip in a .20 bushing in your .223 die and your good to go. That's why they call it the practical.

With the .20 Tactial you need to change angle and buy another set of dies and reform the necks on all your cases.

I went with the 20 Tac and all I needed was a Redding form die. No fire forming necessary since the first round fired in a newly formed case shoots to the same POI. Cases are easier to spot if you also shoot 223's. I shoot Vmax 40's in my Cooper at about 3850 FPS and get 3/8" groups. Lots of fun in a PD town.

I have a 20BRA and a 20 GT on the same action/ chassis. My 20 Creedmoor was the same… but fast barrel burnout

I looked at bunch of 20 cal wild cats. I decided on a 20 Practical. Glad I did too, easy to make cases and accurate as hell. My bud decided to go the VarTarg route. While I am crankin out ammo he's havin problins makin brass. 20 P is the easiest conversion out there.
What kind of problem is having forming brass for his 20 VT? I've got a 20 VT, as well. I didn't have any problems forming Lapua brass. I had a few stuck cases necking down Nosler brass until I got it figured out.

I've got a Ruger American in .223. I have no shortage of 223 rifles. Bolt gun or AR. So I was thinking about rebarreling the Ruger. Since the 20 Tactical (cringe name) is a necked down .223 I could put the buckets of brass that I've collected, cleaned, deprimed, and annealed to work. I have a .20PPC and that thing is a shooter. But... the second Lapua turns loose their .220 Russian brass it's gone.

I know theres a 20 Practical, Tactical, and Vartag. I picked the one with the easiest to get brass. Are there any problems with it?

The one thing that I ran into was the two prefit barrel mfg's did not sell a 7 twist barrel. I want to shoot 55gr Bergers (that's what I shoot with the 20PPC) and the twist rate calculator favors the 7 twist for the velocity that I'd load for (3,500 - 3,800).
I load for 20 VT, 204 Ruger and 20 Practical. When I started loading for my son-in-laws 204, the only components available were 32 gr V-Max bullets and Hornady brass. The Hornady brass supply was very spotty and the quality disappointing. OTOH, I liked that w/ the 204 you could spot your own shots. Later I decided to build a 20 Practical rifle on a Stevens 200 rifle. The Lapua 223 brass was a nice upgrade over the 204 Hornady brass. Loads were easy to work up and there was no fire forming. The Practical has a 24" barrel so it's basically a ballistic twin of the 204 w/ its 22" barrel. When I take a guest on a prairie dog hunt who doesn't have a pd gun, I let them borrow my 221 Fireball and/or 20 Practical rifles. I later decided to build a 20 VT handgun for myself using a Howa Mini Action and 16" McGowen barrel. The VT is my favorite PD gun.....when the wind cooperates. I shoot only 32-34 grain in all three. All three are fine cartridges. Which one you choose depends on what your expectations and needs are. :)
