1943 Hunter Safety? 😱

I grew up in Wisconsin in the '60's - hunters safety was finally becoming a thing in the 70's as these fatality numbers were common there too. Blaze orange and a Hunter's Safety Class and Certificate was required of young hunters sometime in the mid to late 70's for kids/hunters under 16 y/o if I recall correctly.

There were too many folks that would shoot at sound and/or movement, with no attempt to identify their prey. Subistence hunting still existed back then, and the war years were mighty lean according to my parents and grandparents who lived in Michigan's Upper Penninsula - by the Iron mines.

My mother wouldn't let any of her 7 children go to deer camp unless they passed a Hunters Safety Course and were 14+ years old, and had bright colored hunting clothes. And still we got shot at!!

We would listen to the news on the radio and read the reports as the accident and death toll rose each season. Scarrrrry times.

My poor Dad :)

I'd take up year around fishing. Orange Kevlar vest!!

I got shot with Bird Shot while hunting Pheasants in NE PA in a PA Gamelands on the first day of Small Game in 1968. Luckily I had a Canvas Coat with Wool underneath. My Pop was so pi-**ed off he was going to go after the stupid hunters and they ran away (FAST). We left the area and never hunted there again. Another time my dad was hunting deer 1953 and there was about a foot of snow on the ground. He was tired of walking through the snow on his way to his hunting area and he leaned against a tree. He started sliding down against the tree to a sitting position and the bark on the tree where his head was exploded from a bullet strike. He hit the ground yelling and fired a few shots back in the air. Never knew who shot, but he had the PA State Police come to the scene to investigate.
I only hunt on private land now, because had several other bad experiences on GA Game lands (WMA) 20 years ago.
I know that in the US is becoming to be like Europe where only the Wealthy can hunt. I wrote an article about that years ago. The "State Game Lands" are shrinking and more people want to enjoy the Sport of Hunting. Just too many so called hunters don't know what they are doing for SAFETY or being responsible to take care of the Land. Here in GA as many other States it costs an arm and a leg + a Liver to Lease Hunting Land anymore.

Years ago my son and I were being checked by a CO for deer licenses and group of pheasant hunters hunting field next to parking lot. Bird goes up and flies at us, end hunter swings on bird and I yelled duck (it was a pheasant🤔) We got hit by prob #7's at 50-60 yds. My truck and CO's truck got hit! Holy #£€^$&@ 💩. CO asked if we were injured, no, then he ran into the field yelling cease fire command. Brought all over to parking lot and dressed them down royally. Shooter got ticket and almost lost his shotgun when responded once with snarky comment. CO took his shotgun and put it in his truck. CO gave it back with ticket with another dressing down.

We weren't injured luckily and truck not damaged luckily as well. So we left while CO was in rampage.

Ran into same CO following year when he was checking licenses with partner. Recognized us and told partner we have lifetime licenses. Then told partner the story. He was flabbergasted! He never asked us for licenses again though we ran into him many times.

People can do stupid crap when it comes to any game animal.

In 1964 my wife made a bright hunting shirt for me. The left sleeve was red. The left chest was yellow. The right chest was red and the right sleeve was yellow.

A bullet hit near me when I was in an opening. Most rifles had open sights in those days. I looked up from where the shot came and hollered, "I have a scope on this rifle. If you shoot in this direction again, I will shoot you.". No more shots. I found out later that "Hunter" killed someone's earlier that day.

Yikes! I have a mint 1942 Win 94 in .30 WCF, it really doesn't look like it killed many hunters or game, other than the ones I've harvested (game 😉) with it.
1943 I'm pretty sure WWII had most of the hunting guys in the military at that time, so who was playing around in the woods with firearms? Wait, it's Michigan, who knows. Might have been mob bodies dumped. 😆 Cheers
