Guard dogs are a FANTASTIC asset to certain livestock. Hands down, they take care of their flocks like a parent would. But when a bunch of over zealous creatures that can take down elk (with 4 foot long "spears" on their head) and moose that weigh over 1000 lbs and can destroy a car with one kick.....well then the few good guards you have protecting the livestock just don't have a chance. Wolves have been idolized and made mythical by many a novel and many a movie. The real story of them is quite the opposite. I am not any where near the expert that some of these guys out west are, and have already made clear with their comments. But keep this in mind, we don't have all of these "conservation" folks yelling about the coyotes, because of the damage they do. Coyotes are small and weak compared to any wolf and I have personally seen what 3 or 4 of these little guys can do to family guard dogs like german shepards. I would like to empathize with everyone who has to deal with the wolf problem. There are areas that my father and myself WERE contemplating elk hunts that will no longer be of any good advice. As an easterner who wants to take his father on one elk hunt before our time together is over, this is a concern. BOTTOM LINE: Hunters are more wildlife enthusiast, conservationist, and protector of said animals than any other group will ever understand. We are naturalists plain and simple (those of us who are responsible of course) Do I ever want to see wolves go extinct, no. However, their has to be a balance and these damned individuals and groups that like "the pretty wild doggies" need to be shut the hell up and enlightened to how the world works outside of an office. Sorry for the rant, but politics HAVE ruined a lot of what we all love and work our tails off for.
