i went 18" with my 7wsm since that was the minimum with TBAC and magnums.
I don't know true loss of velocity since I rebarreled it due to the original barrel was too thin for the CB brake.
But, presumed loss was around 300fps. Breaking in the barrel with factory loads we're in the 2700's
Made my reloads with 155gr Hammers and my final load is getting me 3070fps.
Balance on the rifle with my Ultra7 isn't perfect, but still a great gun.
16.5 would probably balance better but that wasn't an option for me

Nice! Meanwhile im struggling to find 3050 in a 22" PRC with two diff 150ish monos!
Each rifle is a law unto itself. Unless you cut an individual barrel its all a guess in what you woulda lost had that barrel been longer beforehand.

I lopped a barrel n didnt see really any loss. Ive read about it before, if the barrel has a rougher patch at end, is tighter towards end etc.

I have a model 600 350 rem mag. 18" barrel. 7# rifle. Violent is the best way to describe it. The can will help. I'd prob do something like a 7 saum but I get you have the rifle.

When I was 14 and bought my Model 88 Win……I was seriously considering the Rem. 600 350 Mag.


I'm still drawn to it's appearance……the laminate stock, the ventilated rib, and the "shark fin" (I bought a Rem. Modell 66 when I was 10) front sight. And…..I thought that the 350 Mag. was a "cool cartridge". In my defense……I "was" 14 at the time! memtb

So this is a question for those of you that shoot short suppressed 7 mag. I have an old Remington 700 in 7 mag that I am thinking about cutting the barrel to 16 1/2 inches for use with a suppressor what can I hope for velocity wise out of this gun and any thoughts on the best powders to use would also be appreciated I will be running a Banish 30 can on it. Any thoughts and advice are appreciated before I go to the gunsmith. Also while I'm thinking of going down to 16 1/2 inches am I better off sticking with say 20 inches how much do I really lose per inch of barrel length? Thanks in advance I appreciate any help and advice.

I think you might look into what Gunwerks has done with the 18" 28Noslers theyve built. Theyve likely done a 7mag,saum,PRC as well n thatll give u a better guestimate. But if u have a fast barrel it might not be as big, you cant know untill you do it. Id go for it personally, itll be way handier and for a hunting rifle thats worth a lot.

I should have two of them. My brother bought one several years after I got mine. He's really not a hunter, probably had less than 40 rounds thru it, offered it to me (around 1980) for $100. I really didn't need two, didn't really have the money…..passed on the offer! I know regret that decision. memtb

I assume your going to go with lighter bullets to mitigate velocity drop? At 16.5" while its handy with suppressor for me the diminishing returns on velocity, energy and powder consumption would prevent it. Maybe 18.5" but really even 19" would make it a handy rifle

Actually, my plan was to run 160 grain Nosler partitions. I've got a pretty good supply of these, and I was thinking of this for a hunting rifle that's why I was going with the short barrel. I also have a few 1000 of the 140 grain bullets this would be great for whacking coyotes or wolves or any mid size game.

This is a video of a good friend of mine shooting a 20" 338/408 CT improved. That's 140gr of H50bmg and a 300gr bullet at about 2850 fps from a 20" barrel. Powders don't get much slower than H50bmg, and the muzzle flash there isn't that bad.

I ended up with all of his specialty pistols a while back, so maybe I should line them all up and do a comparison of night time muzzle flashes.

It's a great woods gun. Throws a 200gr bullet 2700. Barnes says it will do 2900. I stopped at the first charge weight. Its enough. But you better hang on to it when you pull the trigger.

I'm a short barrel fan and have 10 or 12 sub 20", down to an 8" SBR. (300blk, 30/30, 6.5cm, 6.5x57 wildcat, 22 K-hornet, 357 Herett, 35 Remington, 35x57 wildcat, 7/08, 223, and I feel like I'm forgetting one or 2)

My first and only short barrel magnum is an 18" 7PRC. I shoot 180ELDMs at 2815 with RL26 and/or 2790 with Grand. Several other powders shot well, but only at much lower velocity. And all other powders went to pot with full house loads.

It took quite a bit of time and lots of component swapping to get it where I want and I do believe that working up a full house magnum load in a short barrel is more difficult than in standard length barrels (or standard cartredges in short barrels). I assume that to be due to muzzle pressure. But I could be wrong, this is my sample of one... maybe it's just picky?

That combination is just flat out obnoxious for sure. I have shot one and don't care to ever do it again. I would say the only rifle that was worse was an ultralite 300 WSM with no brake.

I may be glad that as a 14 yo…..it may have been a bit more than I wanted/needed. Maybe that 7 lb. 308 was just right as a "starter" rifle! memtb
