It duplicates the 7mm RM in a short mag case but I don't really care about action length so the short mags don't completely grab my attention.

What's the "remage" route if you don't mind me asking? Also I don't know about a complete rebarrel job for $250. Most barrel blanks cost $300-350 plus all of the labor chambering it, trueing it, and installing it. I'm not disrespecting him but his prices seem awful low. When we install our own barrels the cost is higher than $250 because we only use Hart and Shilen barrels which run $300-350 plus $70 to rent the reamer if we don't have it. The craftsmanship would have me worried for $250, but I may be wrong, could just be he has good prices.

Not to mention Remington is phasing out brass for the SAUM's...So anyone who builds one is not looking ahead, unless they plan on dropping like $5,000 on enough brass to supply them for the rest of their life. 
Also, the SAUM and WSM calibers don't do so well in short-actions, and are best suited in a long action. Same goes for the 6.5-284 as well, when loading up really long VLD bullets in them. The short actions just don't have a long enough mag box to allow for seating the bullets out there like some barrels might like.

Well I guess I will be getting a 7mm RM in the future. Personally I feel like having a short round in a long action is handicapping you, you might as well get the more powerful and easier to supply with components long action cartridge. I have also heard that these short mags are tough on brass and now that you mention they're discontinuing this brass, it would be dumb to get one now. Thanks for the information.

This is exactly how I've always felt about it. I never jumped on the SAUM/WSM/WSSM bandwagon like alot of folks. I'll just stick with my regular magnums that I can buy ammo for everywhere if I get in a pinch (before I reloaded).
I'm not 100% positive about Remington phasing out the brass, but I have heard that from several very reliable sources that they are, because as I have noticed, that I haven't seen a Remington rifle in the SAUM chamberings in a long time, unless it was a used rifle. I think the WSM chambers were more popular, being one of the main reasons.

Oh ok. I was gonna say $250 is ridiculously cheap with the barrel included.

If you want a 1000 yard rifle, I would start by looking at what barrels most / many 1000 yard competitions are being won with. I have a Kreiger barrel #5 contour on my M700 7mm rem mag hunting rifle. It is 26" long with a 1 in 9.5" twist. It shoots 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips very well (.25 -.50 moa out to 600 yards). I have not shot it beyond that range. I use 64.3 grains of IMR 4350 and get muzzle velocities of 3215 fps. If you plan on using heavier bullets, you will probably want a faster twist rate (1 in 9) and possibly a different powder. There are several top line custom barrels, and none of them are considered cheapest. The same rule applies to gun smiths. Long range rifles and "cheap" don't mix.

Haha! Looks like we finally agree on something MudRunner! I also have only seen one or two used SAUM rifles. Only new short mag Remingtons I have seen were chambered in WSM cartridges.

Just ordered some Berger 180gr VLD Hunting bullets, IMR 7828 SCC Powder, and Norma brass. Hopefully I can come up with at least 3000fps. But before all that is done I still need to get a barrel, and has anyone had experience with glass bedding a regular Rem 700 stock?
