We shoot long across the same canyon several times a month for the last few years. There is no reading the wind in the middle. What the wind is doing at the shooting position rarely correlates to the actual compensation needed. Same with what can be seen on vegetation at the target. The only way I would take a shot on a game animal across a canyon at 1000y would be with a sighter shot first to determine the needed correction. Or purchase one of the Trijicon range finders that calculate wind speed and direction at multiple locations to the target.
