Its a ball head. Just the tolerance is so tight, and ball head is high quality, thats why its so smooth. When you pan the head, it adjusts with very little effort, and stays put as compared to less expensive similar units. I just have too many tripods and want to move this one. Thanks.

Not sure what they really mean by "fluid". Theres nothing "fluid" that I am aware of. All I know is that its a term used to describe how smooth the contact is between the ball and its surface mate within the unit.
