284 Winchester vs 7mm WSM

if you were going to build a 6lb mountain rifle and could pick between the 284W or the 7mm wsm, which would you pick. Max Barrel length 23/24", will wear a compact 2-8 or 3-9 scope in the lightweight talley bases/rings.

I am thinking the 7mm wsm with a 140 or 160 TTSX or the 284 Win with the same, the 140 7mm is about 200 fps faster and the about 150 faster with the 160. Both being basically from the same family which would you choose??? Purpose would be deer, sheep, elk, ram, maybe black bear and caribou

Your thoughts please??

As much as the 284 WIN is my most favorite calibre,(I have two rifles in 284) personally I would go for the 7 WSM except with a 160- 180 gr projectile, not a 140 the for the game your hunting.
Nothing wrong with the 140s but its all about down range energy, big is good!

I would also suggest a March 2.5-25 scope too, covers it all then.

Thanks, I suppose by your name you like the 300wsm, me too, I have 4 of them, just wanting to build a neat rifle for my goat hunt. Could always take my MG arms 300wsm with 150 gr TTSX and would be flat and hard hitting to mtn goats.

Here something to read on the 284 just look at the reloading data with 160gr bullet the rifle heavier than you want. If you can take the 284 with 24" long barrel almost 3000fps using 53.5gr powder vs 10gr or more powder for the 7WSM with 160gr bullet to gain 100fps more.

I've had two 300WSM build and one 270WSM and I looked at the 7WSM. I opt had the 280AI build also had 284 build and I got 280AI first month or so later got the 284. I always figure my favorite is the one I'm carrying but I have to say that 284 was one of the easiest to work a load up for and I use R-17 and the loading data from 6br article.

I could be wrong but think Mel Forbes Ultra Light Arm got his start using the 284 in Model 20 short action 5lb rifle.

I've never need more than 160gr 7mm bullet for elk. I never did shoot above 180gr in the 300WSM figure I'd lose capacity plus had a 30-338mag for that and my 280AI handle the 168gr and 180gr better if I want to hunt with them. Well good luck

I've been playing with a 284 Winchester the last few days and having a heck of a lot of fun, but for what your looking for I'd take the 7WSM. I also probably take the extra FPS a 26" tube would give. In a 22" tube I'd take the 284.

thanks so much, I have been looking at a 30-378 Weatherby and looks like it really sends a 200 gr pretty fast, 300wsm hard to beat with a 180gr TTSX or Accubond.
The 284 seems like an effecient round when compared to 7mm wsm in the 24" barrel.

Dale, at one time I put 100gr case capacity limit on a rifle that I would like to shoot. I was looking at some different powders one day on the label of Retumbo was this load for a 30-78Wby with 113gr/Retumbo with 180gr SPBT @ 3460fps. I'd look at some other reloading manual they has lot less velocity loads. Long story short I got a factory 30-378Wby and worked up some load using Retumbo and in that rifle 113gr/Retumbo with 180gr would do just little better than 3460fps didn't get to 3500fps. I never tried another load/bullet as I decided to sell that rifle

i recommend the 7mm saum in a model seven action.

I to have been considering a 284 win or 7 rsaum, I could build either on a long action Savage or Short action, if I went with the short action and I wanted to run the 180 berger, I would be seating the bullet deep enough in the case to loose powder capacity and thus performance, but not sure if feeding would be okay in the long action. I would be using this primarily for long range target shooting but I would hunt with it as well. I have read that the 284 would get better barrel life but the 7 rsaum would get about 150 fps better with the 180 berger. My Concern is building on the savage action how much trouble it would be to get a magazine that would feed the short fat case well. Anyone have experience with converting a standard Long action Savage from 30-06 magazines to the Rsaum.

I figure he made his decision and has taken numerous animals with it the past 9 years.

I agree with the 7mm wsm of which I do not like because the 7mm remington mag is much better however the wsm is much better than the 284. the 284 was designed for the Winchester M 100 to compete with the 280 in the Remington m 742 and the pressure was less than 48000 cup both were to compete with the 270 and they did not. however the 280 hand loaded to the same pressure as the 270 in a bolt action will out perform it, especially with the 160 gr bullets.

no short magnum will outperform a 2.5" or 63 mm belted magnum case rifle no matter what calibre nor 30 cal no matter what will out shoot the 300 winchester on a 66mm case. there is a case of deminishing returns that was met in the late 1950s. the new powders just makes them even better. mabe the 308 norma will = the 300 win but it will not surpass it.
