6mm Creedmoor first elk hunt

I would go with your first sentence. 340 is my preferred rifle, but I have used 30-06, 300 WM and 300 Wby. I have started in the 6.5 ca. in the last two years with 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5 Wby RPM. I would use the RPM for elk (143 eldx at 3125) and it matches up well against 270 with 130 or140 pills. Eskimos used 22 for polar bears, but that gun got passed down a lot.
🤣 too funny on the polar🐻‍❄️ I've heard that story can't confirm it's true but it's a good story. I have a 6.5 RPM also I'm running the 127 LRX and 140 Accubond with good results on Whitetail, Antelope and Muledeer. I just don't take it Elk hunting.

If I couldn't get anymore velocity than that out of my 338 I'd sell it. Kind defeats the purpose of having a 338. Just as well have a 30-06 with them numbers. I have a 338 RPM I'm shooting 210 gr TTSX over 3000 depending on the weather sometimes closer to 3100. It's pretty much same as 338 WM.
It was my grandpa's black bear rifle he never shot it past 200 yards anyway. I can only get it to shoot 1'' groups with that load. Should work within 400. It's lightweight and points easily. Really reliable old ruger 77. I see no reason to sell it.
My 7rm shoots much better anyway.

When I switched from balls to heavier Buffalo and T/C Maxi bullets, I practiced on milk jugs out to 200 yards and learned what hold overs I needed, but I never had a shot on elk nor deer at that range. About 150 has been my farthest shot.

A friend of mine used an adjustable T/C tang sight, and he could make some very long BP shots with that sight.
I used TC maxi conicals. I think they were 370 gr. ??? I had a bullet mold for another conical that was lighter and a ball mold. Back then was before sabots with pistol bullets . I might have hit him with one of those . I have some with Barnes 45 cal. I think 200 gr. Bullets that I never tried. I could be wrong. Might even be 44 cal..
Been long time ago.

Anyone with a brain huh… these are both adjusted for current atmospheric conditions.
Where did you come up with the MV for the 338. I see most are running between 2800-2900 FPS at the muzzle with a 210 grain bullet.

I don't use ATips or ELDM's on game but I noticed a lot of people do. I can see the accuracy and BC point but I always thought target bullets had thinner jackets. Bergers do and why they are made to blow apart. I'm still confused. I member somebody saying or showing the ELDM had a thicker jacket than the ELDX. I don't know. 🤔
I wouldn't use them on elk personally. My boy shot a small white tail buck this year and they were completely devastating. I think they are too fragile for much bigger game.

I have the T/C Maxi molds, and yes the 50 cal is 370 grains, and several ball molds in 36, 44 ( both pistol), 45, 50 and 54.

Since you referenced the 225 here is Nosler's data on the 225. Most still in the 2700-2800 FPS. I know they are not losing 300 FPS in the first 100 yards.

I tried the 225 accuracy wasn't as good as the 210 and the distance I'm going to shoot the 210 ballistics were better. Thanks

6CM\6PRC\243 for taking deer no problem. I've seen a large 4X4 muley taken with a 243 (90gr AB) that dressed out at ~250lbs. With a well placed shot the buck only ran about 30yds. Of the elk I've taken the cows will double this weight and the big bulls triple it. The minimum caliber I've taken elk with (my grandpa took many as well) .277. Specifically 270 Win with a proven bullet that can handle big boned animals.
