"Give me your best price..."

I always go into selling items on this site knowing that I am taking a loss so I will price most items already at a good discount just to recoup some money. When I do that, I stand firm on my price.

If I'm selling something for a buddy on here, I have to stay at their price but do try to persuade them to understand how things work.

And I don't mind losing a little money on it if it means a good person on this site gets some good out of it.

I spent the last 25 years of my career negotiating complex technology purchases. As Dean2 said - they are asking you to negotiate against yourself.

However, many people do not understand the science of negotiating (so don't take offense) and they may be a legitimate buyer that just doesn't know the best way to determine if there is any "room" to negotiate.

So, you can:
1) ignore them
2) give them a terse response such as: "Give me the highest price you are willing to pay"
or
3) say something along the lines of: "I sense you are interested in buying this and I have already stated a price, so it's really up to you to offer me a different price at this point."

Ahahahahaha I like that one.

I think my best experience was for a camo outfit that I posted. I put it up for a fair price but got no response. I lowered the price but just heard crickets. Lowered the price again and heard more silence. Finally, I posted "I give up. Free to anyone who can use the camo".

I got an immediate response and several follow-up responses. Just to show that I wasn't sour over the deal, I shipped it for free too. True story LOL
I got a better one for you; I was selling a house, 2 price reductions, no offers at all. INCREASED the price by over 80%, sold it in two days. What I figured out is; I was at the very top of the range for people looking for a house in the price range I first listed at. At 80% higher, I was mid to low range of the next price bracket so the house looked like a hell of a bargain to people that had been shopping the next price range up.

I mean, most everything depreciates with time, I get that. But if the price is close enough for someone to reach out, then lets find a number that works. I think what was said earlier makes the most sense. People read a "10 best tricks for negotiating" online and get lazy.

In my attempts to sell a rifle on this and a few other common sites, I've come across a strange phenomenon. I'm being hit evermore frequently with the response of "Give me your best price." I'm sorry, what!? Maybe I've just grown old and salty as I march steadily towards the twilight of my 30s. I always thought the way to barter was if you didn't agree with the asking price for something, you proposed a counter offer and if the seller was not insulted by that offer, you negotiated back and forth until you could either find an agreeable price in the middle or, if not, go your separate ways. But "Give me your best price"?? Do people actually abide this type of exchange? So far my response to this has always been "No thanks".

Am I being unreasonable?

You're not unreasonable
If I get that or some other nonsense, I just don't respond at all. Hopefully it ****es them off! LOL

If it is a well known member, I may ask what their bottom dollar, sell it right now price is, but I am not playing games. If price is fair I don't ask at all, I just buy the item. If price is high, I will mention it being high and give a range that has me interested. Most of my negotiations are done over the phone.

But to your question, you are not out of line not replying or thinking those questions are wrong. If you price it fairly, most good members will just take it as priced.

I feel sellers create some of the problem by not researching the fair value of something vs. wanting to make some bucks. I price my items on the low side of what I find is fair based on research and they usually sell quickly. If someone asks what my best price is, I give them an answer. They either take it or don't. I don't have time to play the back and forth price games. Just my .02!

Oh I completely agree with you.

I do a little research to see what similar items are selling for before listing.
If someone asks for my lowest price I usually respond with that it's listed on my ad but I may come down in a week or two if it doesn't sell.
This puts the ball into their court. Do they wait and miss a item for a few bucks or just pay the asking price?
I'm not much for haggling when buying, If I am interested but I think it's priced high I will just watch the ad and see if they drop the price to what I am willing to pay.

I rarely ever haggle in either direction, as buyer or seller. Though I may watch an add until the price drops to what I'm willing to pay, or it's sold to someone who valued the item more than I.

As a seller, I'd at least consider a reasonable offer, but not "give me your best price". That's just lazy and shows they are not well enough informed to make an offer. If they are not well enough informed to make an offer, they don't even know how good a deal I'm offering. No response required.

I know that I've always gotten a little irritated when someone asks me that I'll usually respond with something along the lines of "what's your max offer?" I've made offers on things that are below the asking price, never 50% less than though. I'll usually go to the product's website and see what I can get it for, if it's used I take 20-30% off of that price and that's about where I'll land as a good price and where I won't go over.

I am knowingly not normal by any stretch and never sell anything. I figure it is either something I might need later or not worth the hassle dealing with people. When buying, I look at the price and either good with it or not what I want to spend. This is why I hate buying a new vehicle. The, let me go back to the manager bs doesn't excite me. I tell them ,give me your best price and if yours is best, I will be back.....and don't call me to ask if I am ready to buy and how you would have matched the price I paid at the winning dealer. I tell them....should have done that when I ask for your best price.
Pawn shops are another no go zone. Like I said....I am not normal
