I have a tikka t3 300 win mag that I'd like to rebarrel. I want this to be a dual purpose rifle, hunting and long range fun when it's not hunting season. It's a 7lb rifle so it's not very fun to shoot as it is. The largest animals it will shoot are whitetail and hogs. I'm looking for the best ballistics as possible, with the lowest recoil as possible. What calibers would you recommend that will be compatible with the action?

Your rifle has a magnum bolt face, unless you are going to get a new bolt you are going to have a magnum caliber. I would consider seeing if you can:

1) add some weight into the butt stock
2) find an accurate light load with 130 grain mono-metals

It sometimes is possible to have a gunsmith put a bushing on the bolt face, if that is possible then I would look at the 270 win

If it shoots good, get a brake or suppressor. If not, pick a cartridge and still get a brake or suppressor unless you go 6.5 Creed because you're seriously recoil averse, and it's plenty for everything in TX except maybe Nilgai and long range Mulies out west.

Personally, I like 264 WM, 284 Win, 6.5 or 7-300 WSM; throated and rifled for heavy for caliber bullets and mono bullets.

Welcome to LRH, and enjoy!

It is not for everybody, but does your rifle have a muzzle brake?

Another vote for the .257 WBY, esp. in 1:7" barrel twist.

Good luck!

Down load with a lighter bullet, add a brake, swap stocks. If you don't want to do any of that, sell it and just buy a lighter caliber. 6.5 prc is very capable for game and recoil is considerably less. 6.5 creedmoor is even less recoil than prc. Tikka makes rifles in lighter stuff, where I think you will be money ahead just swapping rifles va rebarreling.
