So I have been toying with the idea of building a ar style rifle in 6.5 creesmoor for coyote hunting . I have always been a hardcore bolt action guys and don't have the first idea of good bad or ugly. Would like to stay around a grand in price but want advice if there is a noticeable gain in spending more money then I am all ears. Want it to have an excellent adjustable trigger, also would like to stay around an 18" barrel any advice will be well taken to ensure in a reliable and accurate rifle for many many years to come. Thanks!

Just do your homework first. There are lots of upgrades to ar's especially accurate ones. You will likely blow your 1000 dollar budget quickly with rifles expense these days. I wanted a repeater a few years back and built a 223. It was enjoyable and I learned alot

Thanks

Buck

Large frame rifles tend to be a little more finicky than small frame rifles, I've built a dozen small frame and 4 large frame. No troubles getting any of the small frames to run with parts from wherever but had issues with an 11.5" 308 and a 18" 243. Buffer weight, spring rate, and gas tube length all play a part in getting one to run right. A good barrel manufacturer should have the correct gas port size annd length of gas system but an adjustable gas block can be helpful as well.

I would not do a large frame ar for coyote. With a $1000 budget you won't get there. Large frame ar's can have issues with parts compatibility. Do a 6 arc or 22 arc. Don't need a 6.5 and all the issues with 308 based ar's. Heck even a standard 5.56 or .223 would do.

This is not bad advice, they are stupid heavy too. I just have my 11.5" 308 left out of my large frame guns.

I have built a few semi-custom rifles using Savage actions (.257 WBY, .264 WM, 270 AI, etc.), but I could not keep them under a grand because I chose preferred components. This is your easy button.

Good luck!

Go with Tbird86 Built or buy a 6.5 Grendel, 100 grain bullets around 2700.
I push my bolt gun with 85 Hammer Hunter to 3000. my sons AR Grendel shoots sub MOA at a hundred yards, I'm not a AR guy so I don't know who makes it.

I built a 6.5CM on an Aero action from components. It cycles well and is accurate with a 20" barrel.
I also have a Ruger in 6.5. The issue is the weight. I consider it to be a bench gun for that reason. I don't think you could build one with a good trigger and quality components for $ 1000. For coyotes, I would stick with a small frame fast twist barrel. You can get 7 or 8 twist to shoot heavier bullets if you are reaching way out.

Try a DPMS GII. 20" pipe, light weight rifle, this in 243 is my fall thru spring daily carry rifle
Look 👀 it up 😀

My large frame builds are fantastic. 708 & 308. Aero Parts, optimal spring & buffer weights. Adjustable gas blocks. My 708 is a dream to shoot, a 6.5CM would be even more. A little weight sure helps with precision.

Cody, if I haven't done so already, I slept last night and may have forgotten……Welcome from North Central Wyoming!

I don't have any wisdom on this or any other topic, but can say Good Luck! 👍
