Favorite holiday traditions

I stay out of the way and enjoy the day on the porch visiting with the Grandkids and enjoying a good cigar until I'm told it's time to eat......It's a GREAT day.

We used to smoke four whole chickens over 7-Up filled Bass Pro ceramic containers in a large pellet grill that allowed for easy vertical access, but now we do numerous relays of seasoned potato flake covered boneless breasts on skewers using spicy cole slaw dressing as an "adhesive".

My family tradition is always to give thanks to God first and foremost, for his love, his saving grace and of course his son our LORD Jesus Christ!!!!

When I was a kid the whole family (uncles, aunts, cousins) got together at grandmas house. When that ended my mom took over for her I'm mediate family. When I moved out I went to my GF's moms. We she moved out I duck hunted, when the newest GF moved in her mom, brother, SIL and niece come here.
Time rolls on and situations change. The only tradition I have continued besides turkey and mashed potatoes is if you're at my table we hold hands and we say grace.

Thanksgiving has always been about family, food and shooting or hunting in one way or another.

Army brat here. Whenever we were in the US we went to grandmothers house. I never recall setting down for Thanksgiving dinner, cousins and I out rabbit hunting and never made it back in time. Later as a single dad fixed Cornish game hens as mini turkeys with all the trimmings for my son and I. This year kids, grand kids, great grandkids and spouses. Turkey, ham stuff I'm not sure what is and football. Wishing a blessed day for all of you.

You know, my life was tough. I lost multiple loves in my life, some fizzled, some due to infidelity. I put in 17 years on the railroad chasing steel and tie gangs. It was brutal, never home, driving up to 1,000 miles going to and from work. That was every weekend. Now being retired for 2 years and several months now I get to reflect back.
I'm 66, big strong weightlifter. Excellent health. I've got everything, 2 Harleys, truck, car, nice house. The best hunting equipment money can buy. Been all over idaho, Alberta, British Columbia hunting.
My point is not to brag! But reflect on all that I have, and praise God every single day. Even though my life was tough, I'm reaping the benefits now. God is good. So, enjoy what you have, give thanks for your health, good friends, and our new president coming up! God has blessed us with another chance to turn our country around. God bless America, the USA and all my fellow LRH crew!!!

We love the spend time with family. This involves traveling about 6 hours every Thanksgiving to be with family since we are the ones who moved away. Glad we are able to do this.

Back when I was a day or two younger I spent every Thanksgiving at the deer lease and maybe with one or two of my sons. Now I am just too **** old to do much of anything. We usually have family over and I eat too much stuffing and turkey and we watch movies and football.

I had not heard of it but asked my wife. She recalls older family members talking about it at gatherings, but they talked like it wasn't their favorite dish.

Retirement finds us in the Rockies amongst friends in similar situations. Hunting is done, thanks to the restrictions here in New Mexico. We will be gathering this afternoon with neighbors. Wild turkey will be on the table. Family is 5 states away, but we have so much to be thankful for.

I had to Google the dishes that you posted. They sound great. I will have to try to make some. As for lutefisk, avoid it. When lutefisk is outlawed only outlaws will eat lutefisk. Lol

Every year, for about the last 14 or 15 years, in the morning of Thanksgiving day, we cook up some meals and go hand them out to the less fortunate around town. Chicken breats prepared like turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, bread, dessert and a drink.

After that, depends, sometimes with friends and sometimes with family. This year we will have some friends over at our place. Each family brings a dish, some the turkey, some the mashed potatoes, others desert, etc.

This year I made Carne Apache, and will also grill some bacon wrapped dove breats.

Carne Apache recipe: cut some venison round or loin is small strips, cook them raw in lemon juice for about an hour, stir every 10 minutes. Then drain all the juice, and cover with half soy sauce and half worcestershire sauce, and add some hot sauce. Mix it well and let is sit for about 3 hours.

Then serve with Totopos (corn tortillas cut in to pieces and deep fried), the original tortilla chip.

Growing up I remember the earliest memories of Thanksgiving were a pheasant hunt in the morning and family and friend festivities for the rest of the day. Most of those traditions slowly went away with the comming of age and family/friends moving apart. Now we reflect on the past and I look towards the future traditions yet to be started. Happy Thanksgiving to all!!! I'm thankful for this community of great Americans!! Enjoy yourselves.
