Scheutzen Rifle target shooting?

There was a guy in a small town in South Dakota where my wife is from that competed with a Scheutzen rifle. I don't recall the caliber. He would seat a bullet into the throat and then insert a cartridge case with primer and powder.

Looking further, I can make 8.15x46R brass from fireforming 30-30. Do I buy a box of 30-30, then shoot them through my rifle? Have not done this, but logically it could work.

When I get the rifle, i will slug it and see what size I need. my gun was made in 1928. It is possible these could have variation in bore diameter, but seems .316, is the usual for this cartridge..

I guess, I could just start with 30-30 brass? Might need Lyman M. One of the ASSRA form (lder thread) said he used 32 SPL brass and worked very well for him. I have joined their Forum, but admins have not yet finished my registration.

The seller is giving me dies for the gun, but he never shot it. Suggesting I get some Hornady IMR 3031 powder.

Just circling and certainly are grateful for help!

I think you misunderstand what this process entails.

Some cartridge brass can be fireformed.

Some cartridge brass needs to be run into one die or more to get the initial size and shape to fit the chamber.

Certain cases need a bit more manipulation to be perfect for your chamber and trimming to length may be involved.

As alluded to, slug your bore to be sure of the size bullets you will want to shoot. Older rifles can vary significantly.

It will be helpful to find someone to help mentor you while learning the ropes for this rifle.

:)
