Sharpening Knives in the Field

Eventually might snag the Worksharp field sharpener but I thought it might work to just take like 800 grit sandpaper instead to save some weight. Is this a dumb idea? Was also considering just bringing one of my diamond plates.
 
Have went to Magnacut and 35v steal for hunting knives so sharpening in the field in not usually needed. Having said that there is a workshop field sharpener in my pack. They work great for me....even for home sharpening.
Buck and MKC will sharpen after the season to have them ready for next year if you are not into sharpening them yourself.
Another trick is to use two knives, one for the hide and another for actually cutting up.
Or you can use a replacement blade unit......dont have or used one myself but they are an option lol

Deer skinning gets all my pretty knives of various steels. Hogs get the replaceable scalpel jobs!
 
I like to have a small replacement blade scalpel and a small Arkansas hard stone for honing a edge back on my fixed blade knife.
Scalpel for cutting hide and dirty work that I don't want to abuse my good knife that I use for skinning and cutting meat.

At home I have the Ken Oniom edition Worksharp. After the Ex fine belt I use a razor strop. Shaving sharp. Got by for many years with Spyderco tri angle sharpener. Might have to try the Lanski sharpener. Just carried the Spyderco because I had it. Mine is the old one in the cloth case.
 
I use a S90v knife. There's no point in trying to sharpen in the field. Usually you just end up burring the blade sharp and not actually sharpening. That and it's S90v. I don't just run the blade through bone, so I still have a decent edge by the time I'm done.

I sharpen (not in the field) once a pack out and that's it. I'd probably bring another knife before bringing a sharpening kit myself. Coming from a guy that packs out meat using the gutless method, and moves said meat miles out of the backcountry most often.
