Convince me…

I shot a mtn goat at 1060 a couple weeks ago
A b&c desert bighorn this year at 650
Shot another 180 desert sheep at 900 two years ago
Handful of antelope in the 600-750 range
Probably the same for mule deer
Shot a 51" bezoar ibex at 575 and a 40 degree incline. That was a fun shot

So none of these are where your waiting for whitetails to show in a blind with a bench set up. Where they are coming out to a feeder and you have all day to get everything ready. That's not even a challenge

Does the score of an animal somehow validate your discussion about longer barrels?......Longer barrels are typically free velocity.

Congrats on what sounds like some awesome kills.

I've attached the size/score to an animal many times in telling of the story to others
No where near the numbers MarkyMark is telling but maybe he's telling us that the animals size is recognized and that the ability to see that and use the abilities he has to shoot and kill them equates to the final goal ?
Making those kinda shots in sheep country is no small thing
There's a huge amount that goes into pulling that off.
I hope I get to try it someday

And that's fine, nothing wrong with a humble brag. I love reading about other's adventures as much as the next guy....but it has zero to do with the discussing barrel length. Long barrels aren't for everyone but some use'em. 🤷‍♂️

In a hunting application, long barrels have more of a down side than a positive. If you want more velocity, use a case with a higher powder capacity. You don't need a 34" barrel to hunt long range.

Long barrels are also substantially heavier, harder to transport, get caught in the bushes and vegetation, and they aren't as stiff. Nothing is free
Ps the scores are just to illustrate that I'm not just shooting Mulie does or doing a cull hunt where a poorly placed shot has very little consequences.

In south west Oregon the woods on the coast are very thick. One year I decided to hunt with my .375 -8mm Rem Mag. It has a 28" barrel and a brake which adds a couple more inches. I hunted for several weeks and didn't see even one legal buck. But in all that time I was doing an experiment. That was does a long barrel get caught on the brush. Only one time did it hit something. I stopped right then to see where on the barrel it hit. The barrel would have to be about 23" long to miss the bush.

I concluded the folks who suggest long barrels will hit vegetation haver not tried it.
