6.5x06 A Square & Hornady CX 130gr

E.R. Shaw stainless , 24" light sporter weight , 1/8 twist barrel. On a factory Ruger Hawkeye action & stock. No special modification's. 6.5x06 A Square chambering. Bought some Hornady CX 130gr factory second seconds from Midway. Was hoping for some where around 3150 fps. Started with Rel 19, then Rel 22. Pressure started to show right about 3000 to 3050 fps. Using once fired Win 25-06 brass. FL sized to begin with , then neck sized in my Redding 264mag neck sizing die. Worked great. Realized I needed a slower burning powder. Started with 6.5 PRC starting loads, using Ramshot Magnum powder. When I hit 3141fps I stopped there. I could have gone a bit higher , but felt no need to do so. A G-1 BC of .489 should deliver a fairly flat shooting load. With 3141fps & a tight group ( picture ) , I'm happy. Used CCI #250 mag primers. I started with three once fired cases. When done , all three cases still had very snug primer pockets. Leupold VX- Freedom 4x12 scope.

Sweet rug and great load work. That load should shoot thru a telephone pole. I'm loading my 6.5 SAUM with 102 and 116 grain Apex bullets at about 3500 and 3300 fps. Your cartridge and mine should be about the same case capacity. If you want even flatter trajectory, consider their 108. More speed and more BC. Might be worth a try.

Sorry, I see the Apex 108 requires a 7 twist. Nothing wrong with what you have.

I am shooting a 6.5/06, 26" Pac Nor 9 Twist, 3 Groove with 52-53g of R#22 using a 129g Hornady Sp at 3150 fps, groups are small, deer flop. The 129g Hornady Sp acts like a partition on penetration and exits.

That's good to know. My .264 WM is 26" and 1:7"; thanks for sharing.

Our deer & elk hunt are at the same time. Even though this 130CX is way more than what is needed for deer, the need for a capable elk bullet comes first. I never know which I will encounter first, elk, or deer. I'm hunting in heavily forested land. Elk can be encountered at acute angles from front or back. Deep penetration is needed. Because ranges can be quite close, an extremely tough bullet like the copper mono's is what I prefer. They can be depended upon to hold together, & not blow apart.
