Yes please don't start with the Norma case. It so happens that I have a blaser r8 and they chamber 300 Norma barrels and I'm pretty much convinced that would make a great elk cartridge/rifle. It's a hard life being a rifle nut.

That's one big reason I like my Desert Tech SRS-A1, I seat 300 gr Berger's at 3.9375" in 4" mags in .338 LM .010 off the lands.
That would make a nice hunting rifle! I like the R8, it is a nice action.

I've used both but my first love was a straight .340 Weatherby custom fibremark. Then came the .375 Canadian or predecessor to the .375 ultra mag. Love the anchor's it's given me on big game at distance. Still got lots of toys to shoot out to 500 ish yds but .375 just seems to be my meat in the pot choice
First off, I won't hunt with a gun that has a Brake. Fine using one at the range, but I want it off the gun for hunting. The one exception was the 460 Bee, which I no longer have. You could not shoot that unbraked without risking a detached retina or other damage. The 45-70 and 458 Lott both kick way less and kill every bit as effectively. Have 257 Bee, had 300 Bee, have 338-378, 7 Rum, 7 Rem, 300 Rum, 375 Ruger, had 460 Bee. I like guns with horsepower.
If you are looking for killing at distance on game to moose and elk size, the 7 RUM, 28 Nosler, 7 STW etc. work great For heavier game close and far, very hard to beat the 338-378. For pure knock down, the 375 Ruger with a 250 grain Barnes LRX is the perfect blend between reasonable recoil, reasonably flat trajectory and great killing effect, but the farthest I have shot anything with it is about 450 yards. No reason it can't work fine to 600.
After years of shooting larger and larger cased cartridges I came to the conclusion that you reach a point of diminishing returns in each calibre. The 7 RUM is too much in 284, the 300 RUM or Weatherby is the limit in 30, most everything on the 378 case, which is also the parent case of the 460 Bee, except the 378 itself, is past the point of diminishing returns. The 460 Bee is just for the fun of it, because it kills no better than much smaller 45 caliber cartridges.
The most effective killing rifles I have ever used were 45-70 with 350 grain Hornady RN or 400 grain Speer at 1600 FPS. I killed way more bears than anyone would believe, shot them with everything from 243 to 460 Bee and everything in between. Nothing killed better or faster than the 45-70. The barrels last forever, burns about 40 grains of powder, and if you have a good RF and drop chart, they kill at 800 yards just fine.
All this is my opinion and experience. Others will keep pushing the envelope but barrels that are gone in 800 rounds and 50 rounds of ammo to a pound of powder no longer makes sense to me. It just does NOT produce better performance on game.

Honestly... owning 300 WMs, 300 WBYs, 300 RUM and the 30-378 WBY... the 300 WBY will do EVERYTHING you can ask it to out to pretty much whatever distance you want to go and hit with authority!!!
The nice thing is that brass is available and you can reload it with whatever bullet you want.
On the flip side... you can use it as an excuse to try something new? With the 300s I have, I am still eyeing up building a 30 Nosler for some unknown reason lol

30-378, no replacement for displacement. Shooting 174g Hammers @ 3600+ nothing has walked away from that load

..for all that you want covered and staying in the Weatherby line, you'd be hard pressed to beat the standard .340 Wea. Keep in mind it's not a daily driver and not for the faint of heart, but for hunting it's more than enough for anything ..
