Replacement for Retumbo - 28 Nosler

I am with Calvin on the fact that I use the original 7828 do to the fact that it fills the case more than the ssc.
Now I am just trying to decide if I should buy up all the 7828 I can find or try to developed new load with 7977 or 8133 since they are Enderon powders and supose to be more temp table.
Thanks for the confirmation on the discontinuation of 7828.
No problem, I don't have many people to talk about gun stuff with (at a level of understanding beyond "shoot the gun, it kills things) so I enjoy sharing whatever news I encounter here.
I don't even use 7828 much anymore, I've switched to the temp stable double base powders and they are indeed very good. Temp is important, there are few places that get as cold as it does here in the winter while getting hot in the summer - continental interior towards the north end of things - this last winter we saw 3 days go down to -52 Celsius (-62 Fahrenheit) and most summers we still see a few days hover around 35 c (95 f). Not that I go out shooting on those extreme days, I don't hate myself or have anything to prove, but it's not unlikely to do load development in +30 (86f) and be hunting in December at -30 (-22f). That's a pretty dramatic difference, most shooters don't live in places that swing quite that much, and I have indeed experienced the ill effects of temperature sensitivity.
But the thing is, 7828 is what I use as the yardstick, the measure, the control. It's so easy to work with and find a great load for compared to many. If I'm unsure if my load or rifle is realizing its potential for velocity and accuracy and consistency with an untried powder it's a given to ask "well how does it stack up against a 7828 load?" If it can match or beat the speed and groups it's a great load.

VV N565 is the same burn rate and temp stable.

Dont see a lot of places sell Vihta Vuori around here. Or maybe I just haven't noticed it since I have not really looked for it.

I do think I will give the IMR 8133 a try In my 7mm RUM and in the two custom 28 Noslers that a couple of my buddy's built that i will be developing loads for!

I know what you mean Calvin about the temp stable double based powders as i have had good results with RL 16 in my 6.5 cm.

Yes as I've said I know that it's the same powder but with different sized granules. I'm going to try and upload hodgdons reply though. They didn't explicitly say "grain for grain" but basically. They said load data for the two is interchangeable, which is what I found a bit objectionable.
Yes I wholeheartedly agree! I use it for 7 mag and my charge weight with 7828 fills cases nicely but same charge weight with 7828 SSC leaves a fair amount of space at top of case. And yes it affects my accuracy, so can I get a good load with 7828 SSC, yes but it's not the same!

I haven't Reloaded for my 28 Nosler yet. I was able to get my hands on a case of Factory ammo in the Nosler 190 grain long range I have had great luck with for hunting.

Prematurely I purchased 8 lbs of RL33 I haven't even opened it. Not sure I'll use it.

My brother father and I reload together. H1000 seems like a much better powder for me as the 300 Weatherby load likes it.

Anyone have any experience with RL33 and Nosler Accubonds? For a 28 Nosler? I live in Idaho and not sure on the temp stability or if it's a good powder. I've got 8lbs of IMR 4350 un opened as well. Typically IMR 4350 has been our favorite for various calibers. But the 300 Weatherby doesn't like it now with 4350. And we never shoot our older calibers that we have an abundance of loaded ammo for. So if anyone has any leads on trades or sales let me know.

I load for two custom 28 Noslers for friends using RL33 under 195 grain bergers. Works great.
I do believe that Retumbo is less temp. Sensitive though.
I am switch my other loads that use 7828 and IMR 4831 over to retumbo do to not being able to get 7828 anymore and better temp. Stability. I will not use 7828ssc due to lack of case fill

I've had 3 different 28 Nosler Rifles. The first was SAAMI chambered that worked well with Retumbo and 180 gr VLDs at around 3133 fps. As the barrel broke in, Retumbo started to show pressure with the same load as I broke it in with. I thought it was a change with lot numbers with the only solution to reduce the powder charge. Switching to R33 solved it.

My second 28 Nosler has a Proof 26" Sendero barrel with a 0.212" Freebore chamber and shot well with R33. However, I heard that N570 worked best for the 28 Nosler. Switching to N570 that resulted in 3170 fps with 180 VLDs and 3189 with Hornady 175 ELD-X's, no pressure signs, low SD's and 3/8" to 1/4" groups.

My third 28 Nosler is a light weight version with a Proof Sendero Light barrel. It matches the velocities an accuracy of my second rifle.

Note that I tried IMR 8133 in the 28 Noslers but could not get the velocity expected with what I thought was the right powder charge. (At the time there wasn't any load data for the 8133 powder in a 28 Nosler)

8133 was amazing in the 7mm Remington Mag, high velocities and low pressure but I could not get it to group in the time I had to work with it. When Alliant announced 8133 would be discontinued I stopped working loads for it. I still have a lot of 8133 do may do some more work with it and the 7MM Rem Mag.

I know this is late but hope this helps.

I load my 28N/195 EOL with H1000 a little slower (2968 fps) than with N570 but more accurate so that is the powder on that bullet.
I also have an accuracy load with N570 for the 169 HH (3238 fps) and the 180 VLD (3050 fps).

Might consider us869. I've not loaded 28 nosler, but for an easy to find, affordable powder for big magnums, 869 has been good to me. Worked great in my 338RUM
