Cut the barrel down to 12"…maybe 6". This will eliminate the taper.
Seriously…I'd just spin a new barrel on and be done with the investigation. Case closed.
Edit: While ordering a new barrel, get a high twist barrel to load heavier projectiles!

A bore scope performed by someone who knows what to look for would be interesting.
And keep the investigation going, you never asked for a fix, you already know that answer, you're wanting to know why.
A bore scope would let you know if some Bubba put a reamer in there to remove a stuck case and moved the throat to the left, or the rifle has no throat/free-bore at all.
There are some good fiberoptic digital one online for 100 bucks

The irony for me was that I intended to replace the .308 barrel with an 8.6BLK, 6 twist prefit barrel. Now that I have run the FF bullets through the .308 and loaded some suppressed rounds for it I don't want to change the barrel. If I can get a little better ES out of the subs I think the stubby little thing is going to shoot pretty well and it is very quiet. There's a fairly old "recommended" sub load for .308 that involves drilling the primer pocket out to 9/64" (going off of memory) and I haven't tried that yet. I'll probably drill a few out and see if that helps the ES.
I had a Savage that would pressure up way early, scoping it was a mistake, if a guy were to get nightmares from a barrel this one would do it. The roughest bore I have ever seen, so rough that there were still rings from the dull drill dragging chips through it on top of the lands after the button got yanked through it. The grooves were sickening, deep rings from the drill dragging chips through all the way down the bore. There were also snake like impressions on top of the lands and in the grooves where the button ran over chips in the bore when it was rifled. The snakes in the grooves is apparent on another savage barrel I have also but that one shoots fine, go figure. I guess blasting the oil and chips out of the bore for two seconds before rifling is too hard so these two got the buttons dragged through a dirty barrel. Long story short, it's downright garbage, send it down the road or rebarrel with something better than the sewer pipe that came on it.
Sounds like a Faxon barrel...

You will reach the pinnacle of mastery of the English language when you use "whilst" in a sentence. For instance - Whilst we wait for the friend to use his chronograph at the appropriate time we would gladly watch a video of you running the 100 yard dash.

Call Savage. Tell them what you've found. Send it back. That's the easiest and cheapest fix if they put a new barrel on it.
It's undersize in the back causing pressure. It is larger in the front causing poor accuracy.
Out of curiosity, how many rounds down the barrel?

More slugging, this time from the muzzle end - indicates the bore may be the same end to end!
Not many rounds downrange. It was given to him by a friend that was having similar accuracy issues. The 50 grainers hitting sideways @ 100 is a new anomaly! memtb
It is not necessarily bullet weight, but length that matters as far as twist. Now, "generally" heavier bullets are longer, than lighter. However a 55gr flat base soft point, will be shorter than a 50 Hollow Point Boat tail. Hence why the 50 keyhole and 55 did not. I am guessing it is a 1:14 twist?
