Go to the source - ship the rifle back to Savage.
I agree: the FF bullets are awesome!I read through the problem twice and I'm pretty sure the following isn't going to help but here goes anyway. I just bought a Remington Model 783 .308 heavy barrel. Note - Remington isn't Remington anymore, but it shoots and it serves my purpose (prefit barrels work). I used David Tubb's final finish bullets on it after cleaning it the first time. I'm not sure breaking it in "normally" wouldn't have worked just as well but the end result, ie before / after borescope checks, the final finish system sure made a difference. It shoots good for a stubby little barrel and it's a lot easier to clean.

Gives it a little room to rattle around down stream..!?
Sounds like a Faxon barrel...I had a Savage that would pressure up way early, scoping it was a mistake, if a guy were to get nightmares from a barrel this one would do it. The roughest bore I have ever seen, so rough that there were still rings from the dull drill dragging chips through it on top of the lands after the button got yanked through it. The grooves were sickening, deep rings from the drill dragging chips through all the way down the bore. There were also snake like impressions on top of the lands and in the grooves where the button ran over chips in the bore when it was rifled. The snakes in the grooves is apparent on another savage barrel I have also but that one shoots fine, go figure. I guess blasting the oil and chips out of the bore for two seconds before rifling is too hard so these two got the buttons dragged through a dirty barrel. Long story short, it's downright garbage, send it down the road or rebarrel with something better than the sewer pipe that came on it.
Fixed doesn't answer the questions. Inquiring Minds ya know.
I'll see if he chrono'd it! memtb
You will reach the pinnacle of mastery of the English language when you use "whilst" in a sentence. For instance - Whilst we wait for the friend to use his chronograph at the appropriate time we would gladly watch a video of you running the 100 yard dash.HSmithTX, I'm pretty certain that ultimately, that will happen.
But, the "forensics analyst" that lies deep within me/ us is searching for answers!
Wow, I repeatedly impress myself with my use of the English language and my plentiful "witticisms"! A couple of months of rehab has reinvigorated! memtb
Call Savage. Tell them what you've found. Send it back. That's the easiest and cheapest fix if they put a new barrel on it.
It's undersize in the back causing pressure. It is larger in the front causing poor accuracy.
Out of curiosity, how many rounds down the barrel?
