Fovorite caliber for coyotes and why

I always felt that just because my corvette can run 140 mph doesn't mean that is what I should drive it at. And I'm that way with my firearms also. But that's just me. I try for accuracy first then choose the bullet that will perform at those speeds for my needs. There again that is me and the way I think.

My favorite coyote caliber/cartridge? Whatever I have in my hand when I see one.
From .22LR to .300 RUM to 9mm.
But most used is 22GT, 6CM, or 5.56NATO/.223Wylde for sure.

Finally got the new truck gun all put together. Going to go zero scope (100yds) and red dot (50 yds) tomorrow.

As @Jon Bischof, said. Targets of opportunity get whatever I have in hand at the time.

Designated, I'm going coyote hunting rifle, I have 2.

Savage Axis II with a 24" E.R. Shaw sporter barrel in 250 Savage.
Shooting a 75gr Sierra HP Varmint over a light charge of Alliant Varmint for 3,150fps.

Second rifle is a Ruger 77 MKII in 257 Roberts.
90gr Sierra BlitzKing over RL17.

I accidentally grabbed the wrong ammo for the Roberts one day.
Took mom & 1 pup at 200 yards, second pup at 400 yards with 100gr Nosler Ballistic Tips.

Definitely NOT fur friendly!!

140gr Berger VLD out of the 7mm-08AI at 300 yards didn't perform badly.

My 22-250 shooting the 53gr V-max or Sierra 65 SBT would be my favorite and what I've used the most. Last year I put together a 20BR that I'm shooting the 55gr Berger out of and the one hunt I took it on, I smoked one at 602...It's looking like a winner!
I just put together a 18" 22 Creedmoor that's shooting the 62 ELD-VT very nicely at 3400 FPS...I took it out to distance a couple weeks ago and 820 was no problem running Hornady's advertised BC...I'll try it out this season.

Going to jump into the game this winter.
After much research into several calibers and their ballistics I deduced the ole .243 is difficult to beat. So that's what I will be going with.
Med action and 1/8" twist you can launch a 108 ELDM w/H4831 (2.70 COL) to around 3000fps(+/-). Tried that very load last Sunday. W/100yd zero vertical corrrection at 330yd was 4.2 " and it cut the wind very well.
Brass is fairly inexpensive, most powders work, a wide variety of bullets are available. It's performance will be better than a 22-250 in the wind drift game because of the higher bc bullets
This winter I'll actually be running the Berger 105VLD (.278 G7) or 105gr Hybrid. I just have to tweak my 108ELDM load a bit and confirm holds.

Todd, try and find some R#26 with cci 250s, the 108s will be doing 3150fps at the accuracy node or close to it.

I shot 80g Sierra blitz bt and Sierra 60g HP in the 243 Win, 3400 fps and 3800 respectively where coyotes died on the spot.

I run both std and AI. 70g Nosler ballistic tips in the AI, 12T, 3800-3850. 80g Sierra Blitz bt in the std 243 factory rem and custom 12T, zero freebore at 3400 fps.

Todd, in the std 243, 24", 3150 fps with 105s with cci 250 is our norm, 8T.

Rem 700 in 223 Rem with a hot load of Benchmark, cci 250, 55g Bal Tip or Sierra 55g Lead tip blitz at 3450 fps
" 22/204 8208, CCI BR4 53g V max or 55g Nosler at 3700 fps
" 22/250 AI Win 760 55g Nosler Bal tip at 4100
" 243 Win IMR 4064 80g Sierra blitz Bt at 3400-3500
That blitz is the ticket for 14 twist 250's
