Largest Grizzly/Brown bear areas

Yep, most people leave the whole carcass behind, I figured I should eat at least a little. It made some of the best stew I've ever had. The bear came off blueberries, so the meat was almost sweet. No gameyness at all, kinda beefy. Went back to the kill site a year later in the spring, there wasn't even any bone left, but there are lots of other bears and wolves in that area as well.
 
That's really awesome stuff. I can't imagine the thrill.
There's a couple dream hunts that I would love to do. Just never looked into any of them. I know Im not getting any younger. I also imagine that for an out of state resident that the price is astronomically high.
What caliber were you gents using on those bears?
 
I took mine with 3 shots from a tikka in 338wm. Loaded a stiff charge of 7828ssc under a standard 250gr Hornady spire point interlock. At 30yds, I recovered the first 2 shots under the hide, after they had broken both shoulders. The 3rd round was a finisher at 10yds to the spine right in front of the shoulders.

I can honestly say it was the single biggest rush of my life stalking up an open mountainside onto a brown bear. This all when I was an alaska resisdent. Tag was $25 bucks.
 
I know it's an old thread, but I wanted to share after three brown bear hunts and 50 days in the field on brown bear, along with time in Halo Bay, the Peninsula, Katmai, and Kodiak, there is nothing like Kodiak. They are the big, both in skull size and squared size. They are heavy, fast, and the terrain is amazing. That's where I would recommend, the Fall bear hunt on Kodiak.

Definitely a dream of mine but unfortunately will probably always just be a dream due to the cost.
 
I much prefer the spring hunt. You have long days and typically nice hides. I saw 8 bears the first day and killed mine the first day. The guy who guides the area I had killed 3 -10 foot bears the weeks before I hunted. Peninsula bears are sometimes bigger bodies but the weather is much worse on the peninsula.
I was talking daily with Dave Leonard during the spring hunt this year at his David River camp. They were still in the 20s and z Kodiak was 40⁰
 
Peninsula is a bit more wild. I'm certain the biggest bears I've see. Were somewhere between wide bay and king cove. More specifically somewhere between amber bay and chiganagik. But spring or fall the weather sucks, there is a reason there are more people on kodiak than the peninsula....

Back in the day we halibut fished in the area when there was a processor in the chigniks and the south end. Spent some inordinate amount of time holed up in some bay while the wind tried to kill us. Saw a lot of big boys wandering the beaches.
 
Moose hunting north of Chignik two years ago there were a zillion bears around.
We had to have a bear fence. There was a fly fishing camp just up the river from us. They finally shot a bear that was giving us grief daily.
