What do YOU call these bugs?

That's what we call them
Obviously, spelling is not my strong suit either! 🤪
When and where I grew up…..only knew them as locust's!

Saw a lot (and heard) a lot of them growing up…..but, nothing like what they're experiencing now! memtb
Now, I find that interesting. In Louisiana and Oklahoma cicadas were called "locusts". They were also called "locusts" where I grew up right on the Canadian boarder on Lake Champlain. Still are. I didn't learn that was the wrong name until I became a biologist. And then too, locusts are really a kind of grasshopper. And Mormon crickets are really shield-backed katydids. Common names and local names are funny. Still I am surprised to find that places in opposite ends of the country have identical misnomers of the same insect. Then again at least where Cajuns are, maybe they carried the use of "locust" from "Acadia" (near my country) with them down to the bayous.

We had them in a small creek near the home I grew up in. We called them toe pinchers. I remember seeing them with a minnow in their front pinchers. Thanks for the post, good memories, I have not thought about that for many years.
