I was fishing in the NW Angle (the part of MN that looks like a chimney and the northern most part of the lower 48) on Lake of the Woods with my brother in law and nephew. It’s big water by most inland lake standards with the exception of the Great Lakes. We were walleye fishing about four miles...
Great story. Thank you for sharing.
I’ve thought about wild fires more than once. Thankfully I’ve never experienced it. My dad told me that deer season was closed one year in NW MN back in the ‘70s due to extreme dry conditions.
I’ve been listening to

Interesting interviews with barrel makers, rifle builders, bench rest shooters, custom stock builders, and more.
Winchester model 70 XTR Featherweight
.270 Winchester, 130 gr TTSX @ 3050fps. Leupold 4.5-14x.
I saved up my money and my dad purchased in 1982 for me when I was 12. I've hunted with every year since and have taken a deer per year on average. There was only one year I didn't hunt with it because...
A friend of mine who passed away had two. He seemed to have liked them. The only thing I recall him being frustrated with was that the receiver and barrel have metric threads. This was a problem for his gunsmith because his lathe wasn’t set up to cut metric threads.
About 20 years ago I sold my Browning pump 10ga to buy my wife a dishwasher. What was I thinking?
I guess it was worth it. I’m still married and believe it or not the dishwasher still works.
As others have said, the only advantage of a 26” barrel would be added velocity.
I’ve hunted MN woods for 40 years shooting a 22” barreled Win. M70 in .270. I’ve shot deer from 10 yards to 300 yards with it.
A 22” or 24” barrel will work fine for you out west and you can use it in your home...
Deer hunting has taught me to be thankful.
Thankful to be able to experience Gods amazing creation….
Thankful for our freedoms we have in our country…
Thankful for my health….
Thankful that I’ve been able to go hunting with my father and uncle for over 40 years…
Thankful that my boys are hunting...
I’ve used IMR4831with very good accuracy and decent velocity in the following:
.243AI - 85gr Sierra HPBT and 75gr VMax
.270 Win. - 130gr Barnes TSX
.280AI - 145gr Barnes LRX
I recently switched to H4831sc because I was out of IMR4831 and because H4831sc is supposed to be more temperature stable.
Out of curiosity, what kind of barrel life do you get shooting close to 100 grains of powder every time you pull the trigger?
I have no experience with this. My largest rifle is a .280AI shooting close to 60grains of H4831sc.
It’s been a few years since I’ve tagged a buck. This year I took two with my Win. M70 in .270 win shooting 130gr TTSX around 3050fps. Sure was glad to share the hunt with my boys and for the extra help dragging and processing the deer.
What about leaving the old finish in those recesses? I’m assuming you will be applying a new finish over the stock. Once you apply the new finish maybe you wouldn’t even notice it.
