Winchester 70 Long Action-CRF 7mm WSM or 7 PRC? Maybe 28 Nosler, 7 LRM, 7SS?

Hey guys, I was thinking about chambering a long action magnum model 70 in 7mm WSM. The model 70 is a newer controlled round feed. My first question is, does putting a short action cartridge in a long action pose any problem with controlled round feed? I would expect not, but maybe I am missing something. I obviously intend to load 180's or bigger to a much longer length. My other question is, am I just being difficult? Should I just suck it up and get a 7 PRC or 28 Nosler? Maybe even a 7 LRM? I already have a 7 SAUM, 280 AI and 7 REM MAG, so I am looking for another fun 7mm cartridge to play with. I have also considered one of the 7 Sherman Mags but when I go to their site it does not really give you mug info. I feel like the 7 PRC left some meat on the bone and the PRC clicker issue concerns me, but the 28 Nosler may burn out a barrel super quick. Thoughts? Answers? Stories? I would even welcome some real world ballistic comparisons.

Rich can discuss the Sherman cartridges…just reach out to him either on facebook or msg him here.(elkaholic)

I have no issues with my short action cartridges working in a long action especially when I use a good magazine, and perhaps a spacer plate if needed.
That said, I really like my 7 WSM/7 SS/7 mega on my XM plus actions.

GUN WORKS Stated that they will start to phase out their 7LRM because the 7 PRC duplicates it and they predict that the 7 PRC will have great support for Brass.

If you have a custom 7 mm Remington magnum, and it has a good throat length and say a 1:8 twist barrel… I'm not sure the 7PRC would benefit you.

For something a little more than the 7 mm Remington Magnum, but not as much as a 28 Nosler, you should look at the 7–300 mag. Simply a necked down 300WM.

28 Nosler. Almost the king of 7mms. Depending on how hot you run them (195 @ 3150+ is not out of the question), expect accurate barrel life to be between 400-1000 rounds. 3030-3080 is a sweet spot with the 195s. Barrel life should be in the 700-900 range at these speeds.

As for the Sherman lines (based on 24-26" barrels).
7SST (shortened SAUM case). 180 class bullets 2800-2900 is realistic.
7SS (shortened SAUM case, improved 40°). 180 class bullets 2850-2950+ is realistic.
7Max (SAUM improved 40°). 180 class bullets 2900-3000+ is realistic.
7MEGA (WSM type improved 40° with long neck). 180 class 3000-3100+, or 195s 2875-3000ish realistically.

I have a 24" 7SS pushing a 184 Hyb @ 2840 w. H1000, or 2920 w. RL26.
I have a 26" 7RM pushing a 180 @ 2996 w. H1000, or 184 @ 3035 w. RL26
I have a 26" 28 Nos pushing a 195 @ 3084 with a moderate load.

Measure the mag length of the Win 70. That will help determine your choice. I am not sure how well a 28 Nosler w. A 195 will fit. Same with a 7-.300WM. COAL will probably be an issue, since the WM case is longer than the Nos case to start.

I would look at the Max , Mega, or PRC personally.

ok, so now you got me thinking about the 28 Nosler. I already have a 30 Nosler barrel coming in a few weeks. It may need a little brother. I can live with 700-900 rounds. I will just have to only take her out once and a while. My problem is I build all these hunting rifles, then I tinker and handload for them, shoot the heck out of them, then tinker with more handloads. As you can tell I need another hunting rifle like a hole in the head but I love to test out loads and tinker. I also collect different cartridges. The 7MEGA sounds like a winner too. I will take a look at the model 70 mag box tonight too.
