Sherman Xtreme Range Bullets

In my quest for a good performing Long range Hunting bullet I was lucky to get some of these bullets from Rich (elkaholic) and do some testing.

My results were as follows.

Test was made using .308 dia. 200gr , fired @ 3355 ft/sec in a long barreled 30/378 loaded to
hot to post but SDs were 11 ft/sec.

Conditions were = 18 feet elevation,89o F, 94% humidity,wind gust up to 18 mph .With some
mirage at times.

Ranges were 100 to 600 (IN reverse order) on the same target holding the same point of aim.

Drop @ 100 =0, 200=1.9, 300=7.6, 400=17.5, 500=32.0, 600=52.2 for a G1 BC of .637 and
a G7 BC of .308.

The air is very thick down hear and all of the bullets I have tested have been considerably lower
than advertised BCs.

These bullets should do well at 8 to 10,000 feet where Elk Live.

These were not bonded bullets so I didn't do any expansion test Just trajectory,

The 5 shot group using this load was .192 @ 100 yards (Not bad for a unknown bullet and an
untried load with this bullet. and the 3 shot group @ 600 yards was 3.9".

So I think we have a winner.

These are great looking bullets and it almost seemed a shame to shoot them.

Looks like some pretty impressive results. Elkaholic had some test results at lower velocities and a comparison with other bullets on another thread. It seem, he has a good longrange bullet that opens up nicely at longrange.

How does the bc look compared to a SMK or Berger Vld? I do not have anything here at the moment to compare to.
 
Thanks for sharing your findings and data. Accuracy is impressive. Sounds like elkaholic's got all the right stuff for bullet manufacturing.

I went back through my records and found some BCs of other 30 caliber bullets under nearly the same conditions.
These are all G1 BCs and I have not calculated the G7 models.

208gr Hornady A max = .594 BC
200gr Accubond = .574 BC
210gr Berger = .614 BC
Game king = .509 BC
210gr Match king = .607 BC
200gr Barns xxx = .531 BC

These are based on actual range test with similar velocities. (Some were 3200ft/sec+).
In order to call it an apples to apples comparison I would have to test them under the same
conditions and velocities but these are close.

I'm not sure why the Sherman bullets are better but it may have something to do with the
rebated boat tail (Less drag).

This may not be the most scientific method to find BCs but it is the most reliable to build drop
charts. After shooting 3 to5 shots at each distance I measure from the center of each group
to the center of the next group for the drop.

Being fair to other bullets the performance on game is still out for these bullets. He bonds them
and that should make them better for controlled expansion.

Thanks for the report JE.

Rich sent me a few 210's to test in my 300 RUM. They are sweet looking bullets, very similar to the 210 Bergers in shape with a rebated boattail and slightly longer.

I'm looking forward to sending them down range in the near future and I'll pass along the results.

The largest factor in higher B.C. is the tips which Ray kindly helped me out with. I came up with a .616 G1 at 2500' so I think the 200's which Jerry tested would be considerably higher at elev. I'm anxious to get some results from Mt. on the 210's which should be interesting. Thanks to everyone who has helped with the tests....Rich
 
Berger makes a good bullet and I've found there b.c.'s to be quite accurate. They list there 210's at .631. I'm pretty sure my 210's will come in at around .676 but I'm not sure where Berger does their testing? Does anyone know?

Forgot to mention the .616 b.c. was on my 190's.

Don't know where Berger does their BC testing, but I know their published BC's are adjusted to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standard Atmosphere conditions = 29.92 inches/Hg, 59F, and 0%RH.

JE thanks for sharing your test results.

No problem .

A side note to the test, I to found the Berger's to be close to there rated BCs at my elevations
(.616 @ sea level and there BCs are listed at .631 at what ever elevation they are tested/computed.

There were others that were close , but none exceeded there rated BCs at my elevation. (I
was not surprised)

I will be looking forward to see test at a much higher altitudes because that's where we hunt
Elk.

Also I have found that different bullets act differently at different altitude's. so one cannot expect linear results from all bullets.
